I'm working on a custom and want to approximate red hair. I'm looking for something like a Ripcord or Steam Roller type red, and not a cartoonish style.
What combo of paints do you use? I work with Testors Model Masters. Thanks guys! |

I used brown and slowly mixed red paint into it drop by drop until I found the shade I was happy with. It looked enough like red hair without being Scarlett red.

or you can do a base coat of brown and then do a thin coat of orangish red over top.

Yeah, that's what I'd suggest. I use GW Bestial Brown as a base, flat coat. It's brown, but has a slight tint of orange to it, very slight. I then dry brush orange over it to catch the crests of each strand, leaving the valleys darker. Tends to work nicely and look more authentic than just orange. If you want more of a light red, go orange as the base, then brush a tan or washed out yellow over it to give it a strawberry blond look.

A wash/wipe of Model Master "Leather" over "Light Flesh" or "White" works for a dirty brownish ginger.

As a ginger myself I've tried a few different combinations. It kind of depends which shade of ginger you're going for. I usually skew more towards the orange spectrum personally due to my own shade of hair. I've used orange and mixed in some brown and yellow if I remember correctly to mellow it out a bit. I've found it a little more difficult to land a more realistic color when starting with red as a base, but I'm sure my skill level is holding me back a bit on that front.
