Are we crazy? Friends have lovingly called me nerd, dork, and all kinds of other names due to my love for these little pieces of plastic. They accuse me of desperately trying to reconnect with my childhood. I feel sorry for them. They just don’t get it. I’m not trying to reconnect with my childhood. I was fortunate enough to have never lost it. Enjoy the pics of my customs. I do it out of love.
Below is a narrative on a childhood memory in case anyone here ever feels alone in their deep fondness of GI Joes. Last edited by lance858a; 11-14-2011 at 05:16 PM.. |

Part 1: Are We Crazy? A Childhood memory
It was a mid summer’s day afternoon in a sleepy neighborhood of stucco and wood shingle townhouses where the streets were lined with recently planted young sapling trees. Left home alone and wrought with laziness, my brother and I were in our parent’s bedroom which offered the greatest floor space of all the bedrooms in that brand new 1990’s style home. Blankets were spread across the floor with surgical precision to form GI Joe sized hills and caves. After the arduous task of taking turns choosing, or drafting, men, women, vehicles, guns and equipment from the abundant and colorful array of what was referred to as the “Joes pile,” a game of the epic struggle between good and evil was set to begin. With dreams of setting up mini camp fires, recon missions into enemy territory and even the occasional romance between my beloved Falcon (the Green Beret) and his girlfriend Jinx (the red female ninja), it was sure to be a game full of unfolding drama and plot twists! more random pics Last edited by lance858a; 11-14-2011 at 05:13 PM.. |

Part 2: Are We Crazy? A Childhood memory
But then something happened. I could tell by the lackluster way my brother chose, or drafted, his team, the way he just let me have the best vehicles, and the cold indifference in his eyes as he set up his cave, or base camp. It was that moment he turned to me and said, “I’m too old for this, you can have all my GI Joes” as he heartlessly shoved his pile in my direction as if they had betrayed him somehow. My older brother hit his long awaited growth spurt that summer and left me behind. It was a moment of deeply mixed feelings. On one hand, I had inherited an empire of action figures. On the other hand, there was no one with which to share the spoils. It was my worse childhood memory. After my brother left the bedroom, I just laid there on my belly, unable to get up. I felt the warmth of that summer sun on my back as it lazily stretched across the carpet and gently graced my new empire through open cracks between the window blinds. With a sigh I realized September was coming soon. It was such a terrible thought because it meant school was starting again. Last edited by lance858a; 07-16-2010 at 05:45 PM.. |

Part 3: Are We Crazy? A Childhood memory
I wrapped my arms around the cluster of action figures fearing that it may be the last time. I knew it would all be over soon. I would grow up just as my brother did. No longer would I be fond of childish things. With a deep breathe, I put my toys away in their shoebox for the last time and wondered, what will become of my beloved GI Joes? What will become of me? 20 years later, I FOUND MY GI JOES AGAIN!!!!!! I FOUND MY CHILDHOOD AGAIN!!!!!!! It was in me all along. Never again will I abandon my beloved! NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are not crazy. How quickly people forget that people have lovingly adored these types of things for thousands of years...
See below for some of the first "Action Figures"

Thank you! I will never abandon my beloved again. I once saw a kid at the store looking at the shelf of GI Joes with the same glimmer in his eye that I had when my dad use to take us to the toy store. The kid searched through the selection as frantically as I did (and still do). The kid's mom came around and said he could not have any. The disapointment in the kid's eyes was heart breaking. A big part of me wanted to buy that kid a GI Joe. Spread the love!
