If having a hobby is considered crazy then we are all guilty. Everyone collects something that peek his / her interest (be it model toys, collecting shoes, dress or multiple gf / bf). If your friends are saying this then consider finding a new group of friends.

I never grew up. All my friends know this. I believe we are happier for it. We still like things that are meant to bring joy, there is nothing wrong with that.
I really agree with what you said about wanting to share the love for G.I. Joe with a younger generation. At the convention this year A friend of mine and I were in line to get in. Suddenly we noticed the voice actor that played Duke. Of course my friend and I were stoked to see him. Also in line with us was a boy, he maybe was ten or eleven. We noticed he got excited when he heard my friend and I recognizing the actor. He asked us if that really was Duke. I immediately told him "Yes and you should go take a picture with him, we will save your spot in line" He was too shy to do it on his own so I told my buddy to save my place and I accompanied the boy to go ask Michael Bell if he could take a picture with him. Watching the joy in that kids face as I took the picture was probably one of the coolest experiences at Joe con, where older fans like us can pass on the excitement to the younger generations. Some of us are, indeed, crazy. Mostly of the obsessive variety though.
What I find funny, and sad, are the collectors who take this all way too seriously. Everything's got to be just so...and they will brook no deviations! They've turned their interest in childhood things into a fully adult activity. The only thing about them that never grew up is their emotional IQ--they'll argue and insult with the best of children--and they seem to have lost the ability to just let these things be toys. Gotta keep this shit in perspective, otherwise it'll stop being fun. |

I'm coming up on 20! It all started in 2000 when I stumbled on the ARAHC stuff at a Fred Meyer and something insidious was rekindled. 20 years means I've been dicking around with kid's toys as an adult for, like, twice as long than I ever did as a kid. Sobering thought, that.
