I have used this also to make the water effect for my Siren set. I highly recommend doing this in a well ventilated area. The fumes from the product are really strong. Just plan on spending a lot of money. I used two quart cans at 30 dollars each for my Siren set. For good effects keep monitoring it while drying/curing. Wave forms will not hold right away and will only begin to take when the material is nearly dry. Thanks for sharing this with everyone, wish you posted earlier (two weeks ago) because I would have known right away what to buy.

Necro thread bump!
Question! So I want to make a "river" of about 5 or 6 foot length and about a foot wide. In other words, pretty f'n big compared to what one 16oz bottle is supposed to cover. Obviously I will need more than one bottle. My question is more about the depth. Can I get away with a shallow depth by painting the bottom/sides or do I really need to have a form that is a few inches thick to give a realistic impression? |

I really do not have an answer for your question. I am actually looking for the answer to a similar question I had in mind for awhile. The question being, can I utilize other material beneath "Realistic Water" to add more depth? The question came to mind when I found myself staring at a gigantic "price club" container filled with cheap clear blue - hair gel. I thought to myself, wow, can I use this to add depth BENEATH the realistic water?
Also, any good places to buy this stuff in larger quantities or at a cheaper price? I had a 40% off coupon for Hobby Lobby so I got one 16oz bottle for $13.20 plus tax. I'm going to need several so this is getting to be an expensive idea! |

Come to think of it, Woodland Scenics who makes "Realistic Water," often sold products with a smaller scale in mind; Model Railroading. But over the years, much larger scale Model Railroads and toy trains, seem to become more popular. Maybe a quick email to Woodland Scenics asking them to sell larger economy-sized quantities of "Realistic Water" in response to the popularity of larger scale Model Railroads is worth a try. Good luck!

Below contains more from the modeler who made the dynamic seascape with the German sub...
Re: RE: My U-96 DAS BOOT in 1/72 intruder_bass replied on Wed, May 23 2007 1:28 PM Thank you guys! MBT70, pics on the first page seem to work still... If not - let me know - I'll send them to you. The article on making water is a good idea, although I dont think I will be able to tell you anything new... This method is old and was described several times by other modelers. The base of my dio is a mix of styro-foam and plaster. First of all I did not cut the bottom of the sub - it still is a solid hull submerged into (or surrounded by) lots of little pieces of Styro-foam glued together with white glue. I would say its pritty much the same method as model train layouts with mountains, valleys and othe relief... When basic wave "layout" was set, everything was covered with layer of plaster. Actually I used just a cheap wall compound from closest Home hardware store and I spreaded it using a kitchen spoon :-))))) After 24 hours everything was painted including the sub. Top of waves with lighter shades of blue/grey - bottom of the wave - darker shades. I used to work at sea on container carrier so I had to spend A LOT of time on the deck and on the bridge watching all kinds of waves and squalls :-) When the paint job is done I put 3 layers of Realistic water by Woodland scenics. The final step was to imitate all the water coming off the sub's hull. I used all sorts of crap - pieces of plastic cover for the cakes, stretched clear plastic sprue, clear rubber glue (dont remember the brand)... Thats about it...
