I use Tamiya Clear Red (X-27) brush paint and do several thin layers. Apply the paint on the inside of the canopy.

Walmart's a fraction of the price of Michael's. On the laundry detergent aisle.
I recommend using a croc-pot. It takes lots of time depending on the degree of shading you want, but it won't warp the plastic. Just make sure you keep it off the bottom.

I have no experience with using dyes, so please consider this as an alternate method (the examples provided using Rit Dye look fantastic).
My recommendation would be to use clear acrylic paint--as CobraCrimson suggested, Tamiya Clear Red. Do you have any experience using an airbrush? If so, or would like to try, the Tamiya acrylics, available at the more serious hobby shops, look great when shot through an airbrush (you can get a perfectly fine propellant driven Testors airbrush at Walmart for around $35). The Tamiya acrylics can be thinned with isopropyl alcohol, too, and clean up with water. They have a number of clear colors in their line--red, yellow, green, smoke, etc. You'll have to experiment painting with the airbrush to get the desired viscosity with the paint, but it looks great when applied to clear pieces to produce a tint. Brushing also works, if you find the paint is too thick, you can thin it a bit with alcohol or acrylic thinner. And if you mess up, you can wipe the paint off with alcohol and a soft cloth. -Greg |
