i'd recommend some thin gauge polystyrene rod, and cutting them to size. that stuff's dirt cheap and cuts easily.

Use 0.35” (0.88 mm) styrene rod. It’s 220 in the Evergreen Scale Models styrene line. Cut the rods to the size you want, paint them with a brass paint. Put a dot of black on one end to make an impression that it’s hollow. You could also use brass rod, but styrene is cheaper and easier to cut.

Yeah, that sounds a lot easier and cheaper than anything I can offer you. But I went ahead and modeled some .50 BMG rounds just for fun anyway:
Turns out these are near the limit of the minimum printing thickness already, so doing smaller rounds might not work anyway. I'm going to model up some 9mm and 5.56 next and see if they're even printable.

I don’t know how well spaghetti would work, I never used it for models/customs. Maybe it’s too brittle to work with?
You can get 50 cal and 30 cal rounds on Shapeways for comparison. I haven’t seen any smaller rounds in 1/18. https://www.shapeways.com/product/U7...ionId=57796598 https://www.shapeways.com/product/EH...ionId=57216015 |

After a few checks, it looks like casings will be printable in a lot of calibers. The rounded tips of the bullets make full cartridges unprintable in 5.56 NATO, but the rest of these are probably also printable as full cartridges:
I have a set of 250 bullet casings in 5.56 NATO in a test file at Shapeways and it's passing all checks so I'm going to probably put together a variety pack that has 5.56 NATO, 7.62 NATO, 9x19, and .45 ACP shell casings all in one bundle. Probably will cost around $10 if you are interested.

Sorry, I lost track of this thread and didn't think to check back on it until today. I made the listing for an assortment of 320 bullet casings, 80 each of 9mm, .45, 5.56, and 7.62:
1:18 Scale Bullet Casings: 9x19mm, 45 ACP, 5.56 NATO, 7.62 NATO (80 of each):
