I want to be sensitive to different personalities and schedules, so I'd appreciate input on what constitutes a good or acceptable level of communication from the customizer to the client.
I have a custom commission in progress where I made half payment up front and provided parts almost six weeks ago. There was no contact for over 3 weeks after the initial confirmation that the parts arrived. I waited those 3 weeks before inquiring on the project status. After several days I got a response and an estimate of hoping to go to paint the following weekend. No further comms for two weeks. I reached out again at that point for a status update. Two days went by before I got a reply and that only came after some persistence on my part to elicit a response. I have communicated that I am not in a hurry, as I don't want to rush the work, but I do like to know how things are going. Every customizer I've worked with prior, which includes 3-4 others here (ex. Slaymaker, Pugsley, RV88), were in contact at least once per week or whenever a milestone was achieved. I've never had to ask for updates, they provided them proactively. Perhaps that spoiled me? At this point I'm wondering if I should be concerned with the lack of communication and no evidence of the actual work being done. I'm still hopeful for a positive outcome and I really want the commission to be great so I've kept my inquiries to a minimum. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer on how to proceed. I hope a positive outcome for you.
I also hope everything is going ok with the customizer. I know unexpected challenges in life happen, but you should still be updated when possible. Especially if you paid half and sent parts. I would say to give him a call and leave a message about your concerns if you have exhausted all other options. If calling fails or you still see no progress you might just need to ask for your parts/money back. Good luck I hope things work out for both of you guys.

There are very few good excuses for not responding to multiple communications from the customer. It warrants concern when someone chooses to avoid you, and especially when said person develops the sudden illness. It’s called the Rob Panick effect.
Good luck!

Thanks guys.
Called and got no answer. Could not leave a voicemail as "the mailbox has not been set up yet". Followed up with a text and finally got him in a text conversation and he is providing an update (whew!). It's nice to finally interact again so I can reset my expectations based on circumstances that it sounds like delayed things a bit. He did think it was odd that I expected occasional (or any) status updates and he apparently doesn't check even his text messages very often. But I got him to agree to a weekly check-in, so hopefully it's easier to ascertain project progress going forward. Last edited by edgecrusher; 12-17-2018 at 02:18 AM.. |

That's good that you got in contact. Hopefully it's a sign of good things to come. For me, whenever I customized for anyone, I would give them updates so they know I'm still working on it but I haven't done any commissions for a long time as I know I don't have the time I used to anymore.

I'm really glad he got back in touch as I'm looking forward to the piece when he completes it. I'd much rather see this work out than not. Have a feeling it may slip into the new year but that's okay if it turns out well.
