I’ve been slowly trying to assemble a Killer WHALE. This is a vehicle I’ve always wanted since it first came out, but until now I’ve never had the chance. And damn, it’s an expensive and frustrating vehicle to complete, due to a number of poorly designed or under-engineered components that break or are lost frequently. Granted, it’s still a glouriously sexy vehicle, and I’ll finish it, and maybe a second body that I’ve acquired will become a ‘95 Sea Wolf prototype custom. Searching Ebay, I came across some 3D printed weather vanes from the seller bigbotorg. They look nicer and better designed. In the description, they say they’ve tried several prototypes before getting a version they’re comfortable with selling. But they’re pricey - $59 to $65 for a complete set.
Now obviously, if you’re into original vintage only, these probably won’t interest you. For me, I’d rather have something better designed for actual use that won’t break if you exhale too forcefully. But has anyone purchased these? I’m debating taking the plunge. I have some almost whole/unbroken vanes that I could maybe make work... but they couldn’t be handled too much before an eventual failure. I’d like to get an opinion on them before making a decision. But this comes to another point, something I’d really like to see made available by some of the more entrepreneurial and talented customizers out there: make a WHOLE KIT of ALL the frequently broken or missing parts. And make them so it’s easy to tell that they’re reproduction pieces. There could even be other kit options for the WHALE or other vehicles.

I completely agree, there needs to be some sort of kit for this. I had a disaster with my original Whale, so I've been buying up some parts when I can too and building a new one. At this rate I think it would be cheaper to buy an actual hovercraft.

I have been thinking about picking these up because of the symbol. Just a bit pricey considering how much I would need spend on parts to build one for a custom.

There’s one for Cobra (in blue) and one for GI Joe (in black) that I’ve seen. I presume these are for customs. The Joe one is a bit more expensive.

I could 3d model some replacement vanes if someone sends one (and a shroud) to me for measurements and test fitting. Printed in the cheapest material from Shapeways, I imagine they would be under $20 for a full set. If you want them printed in acrylate (which they no longer offer, but which would be the absolute best material to use) they would get pricey. Sculpteo still offers that material but they are much more expensive on everything as it is.

My original hovercraft came broken out of the box. To this day, I still regret selling the mint complete unbroken one that I had. Ditto for the Night Striker.

The cost of building a complete Killer WHALE is ridiculous anyway. And the original parts for the steering vanes - when you can find them whole and unbroken - are virtually as expensive as these repros. I think I’ve sunk about $150 into trying to make just one complete one, and there’s still a lot of hard to find easily broken or lost parts to get that aren’t cheap. Granted, I also have another good starter base for a second WHALE about 50% complete. But I’m more interested in durability over original parts.

For the O.P. That seller also has Gi Joe set of vanes on Instagram.

I’m looking really hard at the 25th Ann. Water Moccasin fan housing and steering vanes, wondering why the Killer WHALE’s fan assemblies weren’t designed like this. And so close to being the same size, too. Not sure how the original Water Moccasin’s steering vanes were designed, but the 25th ones are VERY robust. And simpler in design.
Anyway, I’m still trying to be patient, hoping I’ll come across some cheaper parts to complete my WHALE. So close, yet so far away.
