Finally got my magnets in from Aliexpress' sale.
The good news is that this works VERY well for my purposes with 25th stands. All you need to do is glue two 1mm magnets to your shelf (has to be on the upper surface, however), let those dry, then place 1 or 2 magnets on top of the stand. The cavity in the bottom of the 25th stand easily holds the magnets, and it prevents all but the most aggressive actions (EG, physically picking up the shelf and tipping it) from tipping over the figures. You can glue the magnet to the stand for even more stability (otherwise it has a tendency to fly off when you're re-arranging the figures), although I can see not wanting to if you don't want to mess up your stands. But I tested this with one of the most unstable figures I know - Jungle Viper - and it worked well. |

The test was with a gel-like crazy glue from the dollar store, but I'm going to try with my wife's glue gun next time she breaks it out. I still have to do some measurements before I commit to gluing up all eight stands that I have.

Just a small update on this whole magnet thing. I’ve been using the small footpeg magnets for all my photos in the past year. They’ve been quite effective for the explosion background shots in the threads below:
http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...angfang-7.html http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...angfang-7.html http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...-shelf-11.html The one tweak was to include a thin metal baseboard below the background paper print. I found the following at Michaels which works well, and it not too expensive (at the right time). You get amazing strength and more flexibility in one foot poses with this setup. https://www.michaels.com/artminds-ti.../10409114.html I did something similar with my recent O13 shots here: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ngfang-13.html. Using the metal plate as a base (with no cover) was the only way I was able to get Stalker and Scarlett into their poses without props. However those figures are leaning forward at an extreme angle I never thought possible. It might not seem that way from the final, but note that the camera was set at worm’s eye level—and the figures a practically hanging over the camera. The initial idea was to use a tan artboard as the base, but even that thin a break between the foot magnet and the metal plate was enough to weaken the bond, and Scarlett could not stay balanced (even with putting about 4 or 5 medium earth magnets below the plate). Anyway, my last step is to find a smaller area plate option for the plate above to find in riser stands that is cheap. One option is to use metal rulers/straight edges—but those feel too expensive to use extensively (and I need the one I got for their intended use). If anyone has any ideas (must be cheap and easy and safe), let me know! |

Did you end up with smaller footpeg magnets? If so, do they still need the foot peg hole warmed? I’m wondering how much it requires stretching the foot peg hole.

I warm up the foot for 20-30 secs usually, stick the foot magnet on a large earth magnet, then jamb the foot over the them, rocking the foot back and forth to help get it in. To get it out, I warm the foot as above, then get a sculpting pick to pry out the foot magnet. I'll heat the foot up again to help it shrink back to original size so it works again for the hasbro Joe footstands. I noticed the new build figures have a slightly larger footpeg, and haven't really had to heat the foot. The pegs on the stands for the new figures are also slightly bigger. |
