I’m currently re-reading the Marvel ARAH comic storyline. As a kid, I was always a little disappointed that the toy versions of the HISS Tanks were never quite as spacious as they were depicted in the comic book; often shown as a two-seater, usually with a much larger capacity in the rear for troops or cargo just behind the turret. I know in the past I’ve seen a custom or two that put two HISS Tanks together to make it a two-seater, but that would be a lot of work and really wouldn’t lengthen the vehicle to add any more room for assault troops to ride. The subsequent HISS Tank upgrades we’ve gotten over the years improved slightly on the original, but still never gave us anything I thought would be on-par with the comic version.
So I was looking around at winter vehicles from the line, and I noticed that the body of the Ice Sabre from the 2004 VvV line (renamed the Ice Dagger for its ROC re-release) actually does bear a striking resemblance to the HISS Tank we see in the 80s Marvel comics. All it really needs is a set of triangular treads underneath it with the front skis eliminated. I’d love to see what that might look like, and I think I might have a spare Ice Dagger I got in a random parts lot from Ebay. But I already have too many unfinished custom projects at the moment, so that idea will have to sit in the “concept” corner of my mind. Has anyone thought of this before? Has anyone attempted it?

What issues of the comic are you referring to?
I always thought the HISS II was superior (except for the color combination)0to the first version simply because it carried troops inside. I would be interested to see another version of the HISS that does carry troops. |

I would have to say the HISS II is by far the closest to how the HISS was depicted in the comic and occasionally the Cartoon. Paint it black and it is even better. I am intrigued by your ideas with the Ice Dagger and would like to see what you come up with.

Looking around, I’ve seen a neat custom that someone did, marrying a HISS II body to a POC HISS undercarriage. But there are still some design elements - particularly the weapons and excessive detailing on the sides - that just look unappealing to me. I like the smooth exterior of the V1 HISSes. It just looks cleaner, sleeker, faster.

Digging through some boxes today, I found my Ice Dagger and propped it up on top of some POC HISS Tank treads, just to get a general idea of what a thing might look like.
Also put it on top of a Tread Ripper Tank. I think they both look fairly decent, and with enough work could make a pretty sweet custom HISS Tank. After I took these photos I found the parted out Ice Dagger I was pretty sure I had. It's missing the front skis, which I wouldn't need anyway, but it's also missing both upper side panels that cover over the spring-loaded turret when it's recessed into the vehicle. It would be nice to have those in when - in some distant point in the future - I get around to actually trying this out.
