Hey all, any help would be greatly appreciated. So, i kitbashed/customized a Billy figure.
I got an extra FSS Billy head, and added it to an Ultimate Retaliation Storm Shadow figure. The one with the sleeveless arms, not the Renegades Storm Shadow. I added a gun belt, with holster and pistol, and a few other minor details, and he looks great, nothing crazy, or that hasnt been done already. That being said, the final thing i want to do is remove the red Cobra symbol from the Storm Shadow left part of the chest? First off, being that the figure is now Billy, in the white ninja outfit, he shouldnt have the Cobra symbol, correct? For Billy to be "authentic", i should remove it, right? Anyone who knows, please confirm for me that i am doing the right thing, first. Lastly, other than just lightly sanding the symbol off with a small grit sandpaper, what would be the best way to remove the red Cobra symbol? Is there a solution to remove it? Would sanding it be the best way? What do you guys think, or has anyone actually done this, specifically with an Ultimate Stormy? I am worried that if i use a solution to remove it, like a paint thinner, which i dont even know if that would work, will it turn the chest area where the red symbol is pink ish, or reddish by it bleeding the color thru, idk? Any help, or ideas would be great, or if i should just leave it alone, maybe? I appreciate any help, thanks in advance. |

I use Isopropyl Alcohol that I have at work. If that doesn't work, then I will move up to a mix of acetone and water. However, the part where the logo is removed will have look more dull than the rest. Also, in case of acetone, you have to be really careful as anything it touches will be removed, but it will actually spread it around first (ie. for your case, everything around the logo will be pink). You have to remove it by rubbing small amounts of acetone on a Q-tip until it's all gone. However, the paint quality of the Joes, I find alcohol usually works.
The Navy on this Shipwreck torso was removed with alcohol. You can't even notice it was ever there, but mind you, there is a big area where you don't need to worry about accidentally rubbing paint off though which made it much easier to do.

I've used acetone free nail polish remover on a q-tip.

Yeah if you use acetone you need to wash it off right away. I have used it for Star Wars but not Joe as alcohol worked.

I use Oatey's clear PVC cleaner on a q-tip. It's the same as the purple stuff...just not purple. Read the MSDS and see if you're comfortable using it.
It takes Joe paint (PVC-based paint) off with the slightest touch but on torsos and upper legs (hard plastics) it can soften the plastic's surface temporarily if you have tons on the q-tip. That can lead to q-tip fibers embedding in the plastic. If you use just a tiny bit and swipe/roll the q-tip as you pass the emblem it'll take it off in one pass. If there is any trace left just repeat the process with a fresh q-tip. Wash up the figure with warm soapy water when you're done. One final note...It can end up making those harder plastics look slightly glossy if you aren't careful, but if that happens you can buff the area to dull it back down. Those "don't use too much" cautions do not apply to arms, heads, or lower legs though. You can soak those with the PVC cleaner and it doesn't seem to harm them at all as far as I have seen.

I actually made a similar custom using the same head and body (but I did not switch out the web gear). I ended up leaving the sigil since I’m the comic, SS gave Billy “his old uniform” which presumably would have the sigil. Yeah I know, lazy.
The trick with acetone works really well. If you use more pure acetone, make sure you dilute it quite a bit or it will actually damage the plastic underneath. I would rub diluted acetone on the sigil as people explained and then wipe it off quickly when you are done |

I used Magic Cloth to remove the Cobra sigil on 2 Storm Shadow bodies. It had a slight yellowing effect on part of the figures, but I was able to whiten that area using a tooth whitening toothpaste. No yellowing remained and I was able to get 99% of the symbol off, except for a small spot which was in a fold/crevice.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer, and help me out guys. I really appreciate it.
First off, Skinny confirmed that i should remove it, so i am def gonna do it. Interesting that nobody recommended sanding it off, so that out. Based on your recommendations, i think some diluted acetone is the way to go, but i may have some medical alcohol wipes already in the house, so i may give that a quick try first. If it dont work, i will get some acetone. I def got to not over use it, dilute it, and wipe it clean asap. Wish me luck, and i will keep ya posted. |
