Hi all. I'm looking to make a custom of the IDW GI Joe character Spitfire, but there isn't really a headsculpt that works for him; as such, I'm looking to "Frankenstein" 50th Shipwreck's face onto 50th Duke's head. I've got a hobby saw, modelling putty and a file to get a good fit, but does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing? Pitfalls to avoid, etc?

That's... a pretty good alternative, actually, even if it's not ideal. I'll probably use it if my plan goes horribly wrong.

It can be tricky if the head sizes aren't compatible. I've done this a few times that worked out great, but also a few times where the face was too small for the head or vice versa.
Hope this helps, HM

i wouldnt mess with it. to many factors to deal with even with a quick set glue then you have a seam to deal with. what about the zartan face mask's? grind down the old head and glue the face on?
i would just surf ebay for a cast 1:18th head of my liking and be done with it. good luck to you. let us know how it goes. |

Beards are pretty easy to do - acrylic artists paint right out of the tube can be layered for texture.

Yeah, I've decided I'm just going to go for the Marauders head. Thanks, all.
(Of course, this means that I've now got a Duke I'm not using for anything. I don't even like Duke...) |

I've done this with a McFarlane figure with pretty good results. As stated, they need to be roughly the same size. I cut a horizontal seam along the hairline, then a vertical line up from where the chin meets the neck to the hairline, to separate the face. Did the same with the back of the head I wanted to use. Then I took a small piece of putty and stuck the face on, using it to allow me to move the face around until it was situated right. I let it dry (and adhere using Aves Apoxy). Once that was done, I put a little Aves in the seams and smoothed it over and got an outstanding result.
