More specifically, the 50th red HISS, I want a blue one. I've never done a custom painted toy, but I've done a lot of hands on DIY home stuff lately, including sanding and re-finishing a bunch of old wood trim in our house. I figure this is kinda close.
I thought I could disassemble the tank, use some spray primer, then spray on some flat blue, then a flat clear coat. Its hard plastic so I want to use enamel paints, right? What brands do you guys recommend for fairly large coverage? I'd rather a small spray can or two rather than investing in a paint sprayer for my first project. |

Wash it 1st with detergent and warm water. I prefer Krylon Fusion spray paints. They can be found at Home depot for like $4. Make sure the paint that you choose bonds well to plastic. More importantly there was a 50th red Hiss? Guessing you mean Orange? I recommend buying a cheap 25th blue hiss or the 2001 collector's edition and paint it the blue color that you like. Leave a red one alone.

I did this w/ Rustolium spray paints from Lowes. I didn't use any primer, and the black paint was flat to begin with. The yellow was satin I believe, but I followed up each piece with a spray of a flat clear coat.
I used frog tape to tape off the seats. That tape doesn't bleed much. I'm in the middle of another project, and this time I used Krylon spray paints from Hobby Lobby. They also sell a clear flat sealer. I really like the Krylon better. Better coverage, and the sealer is just a light coat, but will turn a gloss look into a satin look, and a satin look into a flat look. I would recommend taking apart the item, taping, and then painting each piece. I recommend taking a picture of the screw placement so you remember where the screws go.

If you want a Blue Hiss, just get this off ebay, or make a request on your BST list. I sold this awhile back, but i'm sure you could find someone on here willing to sell it to you.

Plus I want a learning project more than I want a red (orange) hiss. |

anything is a good first start. i learned by wishing and making mistakes. i'm sure you will do fine. this is a great resource for help. so is youtube, search video's of scale model builders.
what color blue you going for because that should dictate what color primer you use. but like they said wash it and dry it real good first and try not to handle the to be painted surface's much, your hand oils could mess the paint up. or just wear latex gloves. the frog tape is good to, good tip is once you apply the tape run a damp cloth or paper towel over the edge of the tape. frog tape is reactive to water. water sets off the glue, so if your in a dry environment the humidity in the air might not set it off enough but the paint will which will result in possible seepage. the wet cloth will help to stop that, usually. light light coats of paint till you get what your looking for, heavy coats can cause runs. if you want to go all out get you an air brush. i love mine. mine is super cheap to (but of course you will need a air compressor, get something you can also use around the house, the air brush ones are only good for that but are very quite so its up to you), check hobby lobby. they have a bunch of different ones and you can get a 40% off coupon on their web site. |
