Hey Tank,
I'm trying to figure out the best way to achieve strawberry blond hair. I'm planning to do a light orange base with a blond drybrush. Should i reverse that? Any better ideas?

Well I always try on some fodder just to see what I get.
I could be wrong, but I think a red base with an orange dry brush will give you a better strawberry blonde. I don't think the orange base with blonde dry brush will give you the desired look. It's going to give you a chedder cheese color. Again I am not sure. Let me know what worked for future reference. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Thanks. Any advice is helpful. I'm just spinning wheels on this one. Cover Girl, man... giving me custom fits. I blame IDW.

Your going in the right direction, and orange base will work just not the standard orange. When looking at it a red head is not “ red” it’s a darker shade of orange, actually the color of a blood orange or dark amber, so your gonna want a reddish orange base, then the blonde dry brush.

I'm trying to mimic the FSS cover girl, but make it more layered and less static. I have an orange that is basically that color. I'm working toward the lighter end of the spectrum

If it were me...I would paint the main color you already have...then do a darker wash perhaps with a light brown...then do a lighter dry brush with like a sandy tan. But I also have been married to a cosmetologist for 20 years. :p

paint the head blond with laquer paint. then get some burnt sienna or the desired red you want in an oil based paint. once the laquer is dry slather the oil based paint all over it and whipe it off with a rag to you desired depth of color. give it a lot of time to dry, oils take awhile.
but like everyone said, id try it on something first till you figure out what your going for. when all else fails start over but each layer of paint is also taking away the finer details. |

I was thinking something similar. Start with a blonde or tan base coat, and then add orangey-brown washes in thin layers. If you want it to look realistic, avoid "pure" orange or "pure" yellow. Real hair is made of Earth tones. The look you are going for should be more like copper.

All kidding aside. I think your on the right track I would just practice multiple methods on some junk fodder until you achieve the desired look. Personally I plan to attempt what Voice of reason has suggested. I have used oil base over lacquer and or acrylic paints and it works well and wipes off easy if mistake is made. This also works especially well when writing on figures. IE my Salvo custom where I wrote Right of might on his shirt. But I never considered using it to give a layered look so Thanks VofR for that suggestion.
