I was thinking round shaving piece of wood. Will that stick to plastic with hot glue?

Do you have a hobby lobby? Or any kind of hobby shop ( not Michaels) if you do look for styrene rods, they are usually with the styrene sheets. That's what I use. Generally I use wire cutters or small tin snips to cut the exsisting rod off at the base, drill a hole if possible in the base a little superglue in the hole insert the 1" styrene rod, gradually snip away to fit to the figure as desired.

Not a big fan of hot glue guns. They are fine for arts and crafts that involve paper or cardboard, but the glue doesn't bond very well to nonporous surfaces. I prefer to use superglue and Green Stuff. I use Green Stuff like crazy. Since this isn't going to be a visible part of the figure, there is nothing wrong with sticking a wooden dowel or something in there and just shaving it to fit. Most of these backpacks have some sort of cavity that you can pack with Green Stuff (or whatever your preferred epoxy putty) to help secure the peg/dowel in place.
