I am working on a few things and finding myself in need of a good source for "soft goods" fabric. I know my local Walmart has fabric bolts and I have looked it over but none of it has the look/softness/easy pliability of the soft goods that come with action figures. It doesn't need to be the shiny type of cloth (like Darth Vader's cape, for example) and, in fact, a relatively matte appearance would be preferred as long as the fabric doesn't have a fuzzy/hairy felt-like sort of finish.
Does anyone here know of a good source to get that kind of fabric? It would be preferable to find it in a range of colors, but even just black and white to start with would be good. If not, I could always dye the white to whatever I needed. Skipping dye steps and NOT having to worry about color-fastness would be a major stress reliever, though. Web stores or brick & mortar are both fine with me as long as the product is good. Anyone? Help!

The obvious places would be Joann's or Michael's, maybe Hobby Lobby. They'd probably be better prepared to make recommendations than Walmart.

Any idea what type of cloth gets used for soft goods? Wherever I go it would make life easier if I could name what I'm looking for rather than just trying to describe it.

Try checking out Broadcloth
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcloth I picked some up for cheap off of eBay and it might do the trick for things like cloaks since it is a fine weave and not too viable. I would also buy something called, "Fray Check," it's a type of fabric glue that you apply to the edges of the fabric you just cut to prevent the weave from fraying. There is also fabric glue that you can apply in strategic spots to hold folds in the fabric or if you want to add panels of fabric together if you are doing layers. There are a couple of other fabrics depending on how you want it to drape on the figure, one other 'Tanker was using Undergear brand products and cutting them up because of the microfiber weave and it had a tech-y kind of pattern indention. And Hockey tape is great for straps and in combination with jump rings you can make some belt loops that look in scale. Hope that helps with what you were asking.

It depends what you want to do I use fabrics all the time and make uinforms out of polycottons which you can get in lots of colours. Stretchy fabric comes in 2 and 4 way stretch tyes such ashort lycra and t shirt fabric is am in the UK but when in the states I have found Joanne has the largest range of fabrics
Stretchy material is quite hard to stop fraying but easier to fit Hope that helps |

I posted this in the "easy kitbash" thread, but I thought I should give some closure to my own thread asking for soft goods material. The nearest fabric store was going to be a 20 minute drive so I took one last pass at Wal-Mart and came across a black 4-way stretch synthetic material that I hadn't noticed before. I picked up a yard of it in black and a yard in ivory for good measure and gave it a test spin. Given that I haven't used a sewing machine in about 20 years, and given that my wife's sewing machine had white thread already loaded in, I think my test run turned out as well as I could have hoped:
Adding a Darth Vader cape strategically I can preview how my final work will look once I fabricate a robe to go with the skirt: Quote:

Glad to be of service and you one-upped me on the sewing machine knowledge, it's been something like 33 years for me and I can't remember a thing about operating one.
I got the info about jump rings from this guys blog... Custom Action Figures | Custom Toys | Darksider 80 | Star Wars Action Figures | Marvel Universe Toys | Avengers Action Figures | GI Joe Action Figures - Korriban Customs Might have some more useful info for you on it?

Great looking slings I have used a heated pin before and it does work
When your in Wal mart look at jewelery findings for earings you can get some that are straight with a ring at the end I have used them before push through bend the wire flat to the rifle glue cut off the excess then attach the sling this way the ring is on the side of the rifle so a bit more accurate. It looks like you got some good fabric fraying occurs pretty quickly I seem items but glue and even singeing the ends can stop it if it happens |
