Hi,
i don't know if any of you ever used this technique. I was looking for alternative solutions to chrome vacuum plating. And since silver paint won't give great result i found this paint call Spaz Stix mirror chrome. (haven't tried it yet) While searching I also found something called which will give a great kinda chrome affect. Someone said that it could also work with graphite powder that you can get by rubbing it on a sand paper or with a razor blade. you just need to apply the powder on you piece and buff it. it needs a glossy black base (i tried on grey and white also). You just rub a cotton swab to the part covering it completely, After that, you rub it with a flannel or a cosmetic cotton pad. The more you rub it, the more chrome effect you get. It's a bit darker than real chrome plating but i think it's a great alternative. see my experiments below Helmet was almost flat black not glossy at all. Both Destro's head are the same, right end is the untouched one, test on white glossy paint. CC head is there for comparison This is Metal Head vintage helmet, grey mostly glossy plastic Messy |

Nice! Does the graphite bleed onto the figure's head at all? Does it smudge?

Not sure exactly what you mean (French Canadian here :p )
But if understand correctly, it stays on the plastic but heavy rubbing with water or with your fingers will remove the graphite eventually. Still need to test clear sealant |

Contraband also posted a great chroming technique a couple years ago. It looked great on his Cobra Commander customs. Not sure how well it would work on something that had a lot of details to it though, but it would be worth a shot since it's reversible.

This is pretty freakin' cool, the graphite technique. I'm all about giving that try.
And Ian, if you find a clear sealant that works then please share! Right now, I use a cheap matte basecoat nail polish and occasionally a gloss (or mix of the two) but I'm not sure if that'd change the texture of the chroming. Also, if you're doing a vehicle or something larger and aren't afraid of losing detail and want it in one coat, a $10 nail polish is the best chroming I've found. I've done HEAPS of vehicles rollbars and bumpers and whatnot with a OPI nail polish. They wear tough as f*ck too, so that's a plus. And how cool is it that the video is a fellow Aussie? Awesome.

That's pretty sweet.
Judd, there are a lot of good clear sealants. I currently use Tamaya semi-gloss as a brush on, then hit the entire figure with Krylon matte finish spray. I have a gloss brush on as well for areas I want to have a sheen like visors or chrome.. which can be added after the Krylon spray.
