has anyone taken the old big peg on a backpack and ground it down to the new tiny size and made it work?

Yep. Not difficult at all. Just carve a couple of the 4 sides of the peg until it fits.

I have but I find that the pack sits strangely on most figures backs because the arah figures had holes in the mid back where modern era are in the upper back. I personally drill out and replace a new peg but it is more time consuming

Yeah, did that with the 1988 Shockwave backpack. Haven't had the guts to do it to a 1985 Snake Eyes backpack even though I have it and could do it if I wanted to...

I did that with the 1986 Lifeline backpack for the 30th Lifeline and the 1986 Mainframe backpack for the 25th Dataframe/Mainframe. Both came out great!
