Hi, I have some schematic pictures of a vehicle I want to make. They look kinda like this.
The-Blueprints.com - Blueprints > Tanks > Tanks M > M4 Sherman Mk.I Is there a guide or a starting place I can find for instructions on how to start? |

Well, first you will need to decide what scale you are going to build it in; I imagine it will be in 1/18 for 'Joe scale.
Next you will need to find accurate dimensions to go along with your schematic, Wikipedia is a good place, scroll down to "Specifications" on the page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M4_Sherman Then you will need a good scale calculator; I use this one: Small Stuff's PrintMini: Printable Dollhouse Miniatures & Printies After that you will need to determine which material/s you will use to accomplish your build. I recommend plastic, styrene is good, you will find ABS sheet is better as it will warp less. If you have o experience at all in scratchbuilding (building from scratch)in plastic you'd better start with styrene. You can learn about working styrene here: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...cs-beyond.html If you have never scratchbuilt anything in plastic before I'm going to recommend you choose an easier vehicle to begin with. The amount of compound curves, etc. will make the Sherman difficult, not to mention the treads. But that is if you build it purely from plastic and make it hollow like the actual tank would be. A shortcut would be to use another material and carve the tank's hull from it. I don't like that to much... Happy building! |

Happy building! I was thinking that over time bent styrene is going to weaken so it would be better to do something similar to ribbing a boat frame first and using a more flexible material to cover it, but I don't think that will work so well so I'm at a loss for that. The other methods would involve carving the hull out of materials, yeah not a good idea, or making a cast and pouring it in which is silly since if I could do that I would already have it. The wheels are a problem too, you're right, that's a problem I have no idea solving right now since any material that can hold the weight of the vehicle is going to be very difficult to cut and form wheels out of, and if I succeed, how do I make the tracks, attach it etc? Yeah, it would be pretty costly for me to find this out using styrene, so I'm probably starting with paper to see how it goes. |
