Hey guys,
I have a question I'd like to ask that has plagued me for months. For those of you who buy parts from places such as the excellent custom parts resources Broken Arrow Toys or Tri-gate Creations (plug plug ; ) ) do you ever find yourself holding onto an item you bought out of fear you'll waste your chance with it? What I mean is I've got maybe twenty or thirty Broken Arrows/TGC items pieces, and I am constantly worried that as soon as I use this head or that torso on a custom, a Hasbro-produced item will come out that was more fitting for the custom I was trying to pull off than what I made it with... effectively making me create something lackluster with said speciality items? Everytime I assemble a character that includes one of these parts, I psyche myself out thinking "I just know Hasbro is going to make the better robot feet or gunbelt I need soon" and just let them sit in their plastic 'project' bags, mocking me with their idleness. XD And to be fair, maybe it doesn't have to be specific to those two sources... I just think they're the most common spots to find one-of-a-kind style items. Tom PS - Al, I'm sorry I have used the items you've made so sparingly... but, it should be a testament to your work that I can't bring myself to risk not making anything short of PURE ART with them. ; ) |

I've wrestled a lot with such issues. Best advice I can give is go ahead & do it. If the 'better' part comes out tomorrow, switch the part out.

Tom- I do the same thing sometimes with the stuff I buy, so I know where your coming from. Still, I really would love to see more stuff from you....that JvC Serpy and Robo Joe you did back in the day were two of my personal faves, so I know you got it in ya'. Same thing with that Zarana you did using the SW torso.

Nope.... Not a problem with me. I use the parts I get and should something better come along, I either use it and discard my custom or keep my custom because it's better than what is produced.
Falcon, for example, is done FAR better by Aly than Hasbro.

I used to be like that, but then I went from ordering just so I could get something before they sold out, to only ordering if I really planned on using it. So in other words, if I ordered it, I had a plan for it already, or close to it.
I find it's cheaper that way too, lol.. that way I'm not putting in a $50 order and not using it and that $50 is just sitting in my cast parts drawer, lol. |

Joe - I know exactly what you mean, but for me, it's almost the reverse... when I see a really good head or torso on Broken Arrow or TGC, I say to myself "Holy moly! I can make a great _____ with that!" but then once I have it in my hand, I get it in my head that while I have a good parts selection ready, the PERFECT parts combo is right around the corner.
Samantha - Yeah, especially in this economy I'm a tad bit more frugal with my expenses, even though I can't be fired (Yay Army!) so it's limited my purchases... which makes my hoarding complex even WORSE! XD Tom |
