Hello all! I am kind of new to customizing and have only tackled a few figures so far. The threads in this forum have been extremely helpful as far as figure painting is concerned, so thank you to everyone who has posted advice! I am in the process of attempting a modern-era Hiss repaint (found one at Marshall's for $10!), but am unsure of the preferred methods. I was able to glean some info from this older thread through a Google search:
http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...-vehicles.html Basically, I'd like to know if I'm on the right track with what I plan to do; I welcome any and all suggestions. So far I plan to: 1. Wash the disassembled tank parts thoroughly with soap and water. 2. Go over the main portions of the body with a very fine grit sandpaper. 3. Paint outside on a less-humid day(ha! I live in Florida). 4. Use several thin coats. In the previous post, Krylon spray paint was mentioned as being very good. Is this still the case, or is there something better out there? Also, is it best to use a primer and sealer, or are these not necessary? A huge thanks to any that may be able to help! |

I'm no expert and have never customized one of my own vehicles. But from what I've read on here and on other sites Krylon for plastic works very well for vehicles.

I wouldnt wash it i dont even sand them unless they need it primer is key and a thin coat at that krylon makes a good paint rustoleum is good as well go to a hobby store and look around at their paint selections . Light coats either way take your time . Humid day is okay just let it dry in your bathroom with the fartfan on .good luck

I use krylon on my vehicles and do not wash or sand them first. But I paint them straight out of the box new. If it's been sitting around collecting dust, then yes wash it.
I usually do two coats. For detail work, I just use whats around the house, you get a lot of different opinions on that. Have fun. |

Thank you all for the tips and advice! I think I'll skip washing and sanding as the vehicle is brand new. Very cool/helpful vid, btw Phantro.

I'm pretty new at customizing too, but I can tell you from experience that Krylon Fusion works amazing!! I'm making (almost done with) a custom vehicle righ now, and thats what I've used. I'm not sure about using regular Krylon though. I asked the same question and was adivsed to use the Krylon Fusion, I love it!
Hope that helps!

I've never used Krylon Fusion, so I'll trust the guys here, but for an alternative, Rustoleum 2x Premium is also fantastic. I use it to repaint and customize football helmets and it goes on very smooth with very few coats. It also advertises as painter/primer in 1, but I would still put down a primer coat first.

If you can find vehicles on clearance, they're good to practice on, but it's hard to mess this up. That was a nice video posted by Phantro, but it took that guy 8 days on letting paint dry! I put two coats on in 30min without a problem. Also he was washing it to get oil off and then touching it with his oily hands.
If your going to go through all that trouble, you'd want it in a clean room, like an auto body paint shop. It's overkill. Just nail it w/ krylon and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Vehicles are pretty easy to do and you get more paint for your buck w/ krylon. Good luck. |
