Hello. I'm brainstorming to design and build a custom underwater Cobra base roughly 36"long x 24" deep x 28" tall (roughly). My thought is to have 3 levels inside and maybe some plexiglass windows/port holes. Trying to get an idea for shape and what materials to build it out of. Does anyone have any ideas and have you seen any underwater base pics on hisstank or the net? Thanks. Yo Joe!

I like your ambition: If I had the work space and the little joes I'd do this myself, but I'm all 12 inch joes and Sigma 6.
Have you thought about some clear tuperware bowls? Turn em' over and you have individual rooms/sections. Think in the vein of the underwater city in Star Wars Episode One. As for connecting corridors- how about clear plastic cups? The cobra staffer's would have to watch their heads when crossing from sector to sector, but that could work. I'd also look at a pool supply store. Keep us posted |

I recommend adding in a transparent punch bowl turned upside down, to serve as an observation dome with a control center of sorts inside it.
EDIT: well looks like Mike beat me too it! |

There's a decent underwater base in ROC, I've added some links below (or just watch the movie ;)).

Things like a moon pool would be neat, some kind of doomsday weapon like a missile silo or elevating death ray.
Check out places like Target's home section for their dinnerware, they usually have some kind of seasonal themed food container like salad bowls and such that if you put two together you could get a spherical-ish shape like those retro undersea communities from the 60's and 70's. (kinda like what Mikeadib suggested) Home Depot or Lows has a bunch of ABS tubing of different sizes for either walkways/air locks or even support columns. Check out movies like; Sphere, The Abyss, Leviathan, Deep Star Six and the Rise of Cobra (like lardman suggested) for inspiration. Hell, even Sealab 2021 had some shots of that retro complex. Toys R Us even has a submarine that can carry troops about... Animal Planet Deep Sea Submarine Playset - Toys R Us - Toys "R" Us As well as lots of other stuff for undersea adventure with their Animal Planet line... Animal Planet Deep Sea Adventure Playset - Giant Squid - Toys R Us - Toys "R" Us The UK has a playset out right now under their Soldier Force line... Soldier Force Submarine Playset - Smyths Toys So many things you could do.

Hmm, I think you should add testing facilities for bio hazards, like a umbrella base from resident evil. Personally i would make it like a submersible aircraft carrier kinda thing too, good to keep things mobile.

awesome ideas! Thanks! Keep them coming! One issue i'm running into on using plastic containers is keeping it where I can easily get inside to change out figures or position them. Very good ideas! I was also think of adding more sealife like the shark pictures to give it more appeal. I'm going to try to build some underwater displays outside the base, including making a version of the tube worm collumns from the MASS Device. So far i'm going to just use the collumns, I don't know how good I could make the heads of the worms or how I would do the heads.

Here's some links to actual Deep Sea Labs. A good start here. Many times more than not though underwater deep sea vehicles and stations are cylinder shaped, as it is the most resistant to the pressure changes. Keep that in mind in your designs. Straight edged outer walls dont hold back the pressure like a rounded shape does so be very aware of that in your designs for the OUTER look of the station.
