I used this method for the first time last night. Went perfectly well the on the first figure, but had trouble the second go around. I couldn't get my vice to to snap my second figure (Green Shirt Trooper). So i took him outside and found a good smooth rock to prop him on. I used the same principle but with a hammer and hard surface, in this case a rock. IT worked just as well.

Thank you... I split one last night with a screw driver and stuck it into my finger.

While I agree it does warp the shoulders a bit, but I sort of found a way to do it without warping the shoulders, at least, not too much.
I used a vice before, and it resulted in warped shoulders, which was sort of ok, because I would sand the shoulder joints anyway. But one time, I lent the vice grip to friend, but at the same time I was itching to do a custom. So I decided to try out a pair of locking pliers. I just adjusted the width of the jaws to the width of the shoulders of the figure. Then I put the figure in a thick wool sock, and roll the sock around it twice. Then I gripped the whole thing with the locking pliers, and wrap the handles of the pliers in a towel.
Now this is the tricky part. You have to apply a sudden force on the pliers, or at least apply enough force that the figure breaks apart in a few seconds. I think it is the extended application of force on the figure that ruins the shoulders. I usually place the whole contraption (figure, sock, pliers, towel) on the sofa with the pliers on its side, hold the pliers, and throw my weight down. You have to be careful though, because once I caught a bit of my finger between the handles of the pliers, and I can tell you, it wasn't a nice feeling (which is why I wrap it in a towel before I apply force).
So far, this method has worked very well for me, with no ruined or warped shoulders. It does ruin some of the pegs inside the torso, but that's nothing a little super glue can't fix.

MTN, you my good man have officially been upgraded to "God-like" status with me! I just cracked a TRU Firefly and a Red Fang Ninja with this method, and let me tell you my index finger is regretting me not doing my homework before trying to get it apart. By the by, just because a butter knife is not razor sharp, that dose NOT mean it cant give you a REALLY deep cut!
Oh, and Im not sure where you guys are getting warping from. I used a thicker insulated sock, and the only issue I had was with 1 pin out of four breaking off on the inside of the Red Fang Ninja. LOTS of glue on that one and the plastic is very "enamel painted"-ish if you can catch my drift on that....

I have tried this method a couple of times after first hearing about it a couple of nights ago. Other than completely destroying most of the inner pegs, it worked great.
I'm using a small portable table vice and wrapping the Joes in an old protective "Arm Guard" sleeve from my factory work days. Should I maybe be using something with a softer material? I don't know if that would make a difference with the inner pegs.

Just a note, Crimson Troopers are SUPER easy to crack open. Just remove one of the shoulderpads and jam a little screwdriver into the hole there. Then pry at it there and the figure starts popping apart.

I've never opened up any 25th style figure's chest. But read this thread in great interest. If you are going to get a vise just to do this I recommend a wood vise. No worries about damage from grooved metal of regular vises.

I cracked apart a Wild Bill (the same one in the pictures of this tutorial as a matter of fact) tonight and, without gluing him back together, I am finding that it seems he is a lot more wonkier/wobblier than before I cracked him. Is it possible I'm missing a piece that fell out that should be "restraining" the post inside the chest more?
Also, no one has really answered what types of glue(s) they're using when re-connecting these figs.
