I remove the legs, then I take a washcloth and fold it in half and then wrap it around the fig (not overly tight) a few times, then when I put them in the vise I make sure the shoulders are between the 'clamp' part of the so they will take the pressure and make sure the body is perpendicular to the vice. As I tighten the vise, I hold the fig a little make sure he does not shift or start to turn, then just go slowly and listen. The torso I have ruined more than any other is RIA Scarlett, and even that is very rare.
Yeah, I mean everybody screws up every once in awhile, I'd imagine. I'm no master, but I've probably popped 20+ torsos with only one total fail, and one "eh... I can put a vest overtop of it!") It may be a bad idea for the list, but I've heard people mention some red-flag figures that may be really difficult to pop. Perhaps we only keep ones listed that keep popping up as errors, or tally them? I dunno... Or maybe list "things to be aware of", like extra glue or the comment like Shogi mentioned about the back hole being glued to the front of the torso on TF Duke. |

So how many have actually done CS Snake Eyes with no problem? I had a problem with that one twice. Just soft arm plastic.

Fellow SW customizer roron_corrob pointed me to the vise method, after buying a couple of 25th. Storm Shadows from him. I don't have a vise, but I figured I could use an adjustable wrench just as well. I later saw this method's been around for a while, but I just used a cloth instead of allen wrenches and such.
Worked like a charm, as easy as cracking open wallnuts! |

I'm not sure if this has already been answered, but how much force does one need to apply (on average)?
E.g. how many turns on a standard bench vice and/or how much movement of the vice jaws? |

Older figures, in general, from the early 25th line seem to be easier to crack. More recent ones really applied the glue (like RoC), and some of the frailer female torso I've found crush easier, so watch the pressure there. That's my take on it, others may have better, more accurate advice. |

Thanks, I was asking as I had a ROC SS in the vice yesterday and all that seemed to happen were the arms got very squashed (though sprung back when I took him out).
I can't see any change in the glue lines (which actually look like they might have been friction welded together from the plastic seam you can see under the armpits). I guess I should just try to find a cheap ROC figure and keep on turning till it breaks or opens, then I'll have a feeling for it. |

TLD pointed me in the direction of the exacto method and it works like ACES every time. And there are rarely, if ever, noticeable marks left behind.

Not that anyone asked, but I tried the channel-lock/sock method on a couple of similarly-constructed Marvel Universe figures, and it worked like a charm.

Nope, not usually. It splits clean. I've only had damage once when I tried to split a Tiger Force Flint torso. The arms got flattened a little, but it didn't cause any real damage. Only that torso gave me trouble. I'm pretty sure there was way too much glue used on the figure.
I had an issue with this same figure and method. :-(
