just bought a vice today. first figure i tried was a pit commando and wasnt having much luck so i switched over to a city strike duke. POP went the weasel! threw a couple more in just to make sure and then tried the commando again and was successful. best $20 i ever spent.
edit- just tried a desert ambush duke and it would not pop to save its life. arms are a little mangled at the shoulders now but they still work. was trying to build a footloose custom by using the bottom half of the duke torso (untucked fatigue shirt without the skirting that makes the legs unmovable) and the top part of a attack on the pit trooper (fatigue shirt with rolled up sleeves). any suggestions let me know. I had trouble with a Night Adder. Once I had the vice tightened down on it, I took a small flat head screw driver and put the tip on the shoulder seam. Gave it a little tap and the torso cracked just fine. No damage to the figure.

I don't have a vise but I use a sock and a pair of pliers.
I've found the sometimes the shoulder joints get bent or breaks. And a few times the chest gets bent. |

Is there a way we could "sticky" or post in the first post a list (that could be added to) of "difficult" torsos to crack, as a warning to others when to be cautious? (Or if there's one, can you point me to it?)
I've only "ruined" 2 torsos so far, which leaves me at about a 95% success rate... Sometimes I've used a tad too much pressure and had a few stress marks, but nothing major. The TRU RoC 5-pack Dial-Tone torso took too much pressure to crack, that it completely warped it. Not sure if it's the glue on that specific figure, or all the Lady Jaye/Cover Girl/Dial-Tone torsos... But I need to crack a RoC CG torso fairly soon for a custom, and I wonder if she's going to behave the same way, too? |

We can edit the first post with a list of difficult torsos to crack. but we would need to actually know said torsos (might be good idea to add on the list what happened to the torsos when we tried to crack them) right now we have:
ROC Dial Tone I'll add to that list: 25th Tiger Force Duke (The hole in the back WILL snap off of the back due to the glue and construction of the insides) 25th Arctic Snake Eyes (Shoulder stress marks/cracks) Now here's where we may run into some problems, I too use the sock and pliers method and I think because of that, I've had some figures that work and don't work. Gen Hawk for instance, 2 out of 3 times, one of his shoulders snapped the peg that goes into the torso. I don't know if that's because I'm using th epliers, had the pliers on the wrong size or if those two were just from a bad batch. (I'm assuming it's the pliers) But as a cautionary tale we can make up a list |

I had some issues popping open RoC Destro. Channel locks and a sock method.

Breaking torsos apart will vary for everyone. I've ran into snags all around. Eventually every figure is going to be on the list at some point or another.

I remove the legs, then I take a washcloth and fold it in half and then wrap it around the fig (not overly tight) a few times, then when I put them in the vice I make sure the shoulders are between the 'clamp' part of the so they will take the pressure and make sure the body is perpendicular to the vice. As I tighten the vice, I hold the fig a little make sure he does not shift or start to turn, then just go slowly and listen. The torso I have ruined more than any other is RIA Scarlett, and even that is very rare.
