I made the helmet out of epoxy putty over his original helmet. It doesn't work very well because the original helmet is so flexible. The next step is to dry a big ball and wittle a helmet out of it. See if that works. Otherwise, I'll just glob the stuff on his head and dremel out a pilot's head. I wasn't sure if you were going for Deck Crew or Pilots with those guys.. might want to rethink the head adn helmet size(Breaker has a noggin and a half.. as it is, they're getting close to Space ball trooper looking helmets... you should look into the Star Wars Naboo Soldiers that came out a couple years ago, they made Yellow and Red ones a couple years apart... I decided to take a little break from the styrofoam to work on the Jets which will populate this monstrosity. I had mentioned earlier that I wanted to paint up the X-30 into a Tuskegee airmen paint scheme. This proved a little more challenging than it at first seemed. I didn't particularly like the molded color of the X-30. And the shine needed to go:
This jet has a lot more nooks and crannies than the skystriker and proved a little more difficult to sand to a dull finish. She has more contours, so even though it was a smaller jet, it took twice as long to sand. I used 600 grit sandpaper. Just enough to rough it up, but not enough to gouge. I'm uniform with the colors of my jets. The engines had to change too. I always thought that the last thing anyone wanted their jet to be neon-colored. Neither did I. After a little roughing up, it seemed to hold paint fairly well. It's a matte finish and I didn't use bonding primer, so I'm not counting on it to hold under heavy play, but I'm not going to play with it.

Wow... man... have you tried just using Krylon Fusion and Testors Dullcoat? That would save you... god... just a shit ton of needless work.

I didn't get a hell of a lot accomplished today, but I like how the paint scheme on the X-30 is shaping up.
The lines ended up being sharper with little or no bleed. I was pretty happy. Overspray became a big problem and I ended up having to be very vigilant since matte gray primer seemed to attract gloss red paint like a big-titted virgin attracts frat boys. I had to respray a little to prevent a red tint to the gray, but it looks okay. The stabilizers are a little dark. In retrospect, instead of primering them with black and then red, I should have primered them gray and then red and black. Might have looked a little more matched. If it looks too bad, I can always strip the stabilizers and start over. We'll see how it looks after all the paint dries tomorrow. As a side note, the foam glue holds the edge as hard as a rock laterally, and the cantilever flexed a good half an inch before the joint gave way. Very impressed by the glue. Looks like we got ourselves a winner! Hopefully, I can get more foam sheets on Wednesday. I'll finish up the conquest tomorrow and start gluing after adding a few more cross supports to the sections of the carrier. I took the day off of work, so I should get an early start.

I do appreciate the input, though. For some reason, that plastic paint won't stick to the skystriker. I'm sure that Unclassified probably knows why, but I'm happy with the results so far.
