This project coerced me back into Joe collecting after about 19 years off.
It's really incredible and I look forward to the new posts. Really fascinating following along and seeing the process as it comes together. |

Wow. Twice in one week. Amazing... okay, maybe it's not that amazing, but we've got to work ourselves back slowly. Kind of like after you haven't run for months, you're not gonna do 8 miles your first day back. I did that once (actually) and it is not recommended.
The advantage of having a project this large is when I feel I've hit an inspirational wall, I can always tackle another part of the project. I feel I came to that wall with the CDC computer consoles, so I moved on to the Exterior supports for the flight deck. They're simple and repetitive work, much like the hull of the ship. I love seeing the deck partially put together because it reminds me of what I have to look forward to... The first problem I encountered was that I might have to create these supports to overlap the other to avoid unneeded repetitive work (the whole reason I was doing it in the first place). But then I figured these supports will be covered, so it's not like we'll ever see the double supports. This simplifies the equation, which is always ideal. Continued...

These supports were an easy solution to something I had worried about since the start. I had mentioned it before, but the sheets were slightly bowed when I got them and stay slightly bowed when they are placed on the deck. These supports allow me to solve this problem.
Like I said, this is repetitive work. And I'm gonna need a bunch of these. Fortunately, I won't need as many as I thought. Three across works quite nicely and should provide enough support for this cantilever. And the facade will fit against it nicely.

So, those triangles I came up with yesterday came in handy today. I started adding them to the sides of the carrier. I was a little concerned about the hangar deck openings, but I'll talk about that later. One side of the ship would be less complicated than the other, but not difficult in the least.
As an engineer, I always worry about lateral stabilization. And in this case, I'm talking about the supports not twisting when a load is applied to them. I may have solved half of this problem by these little wedges. I simply cut the corners off of a 90 degree corner and glued them in place. That combined with the joint glue and a bead placed in the opposite corner, I hope that's enough to create a minimal amount of moment on any one joint. Continued...
