Looks great Z. Let us know how that elevator works.

The elevator is one of those annoying things that I knew I would have to get done, but never wanted to do it. I always figured the problem-solving would be far too great. Melding foam with other materials kind of makes me wish I had made this thing out of wood, in the same fashion but out of a different material. But as always, we work with our constraints (a wooden carrier would weigh 10x as much and be a pain to move around, but it would be sturdier) and I always enjoy a good challenge.
Last time around, I thought about using wood, but as wood tends to get bulky the more structural integrity you try to add to it, I decided to completely go a different direction. I thought about steel, because I might actually be able to weld a frame and make the elevator out of it, but steel is very heavy-duty material, and I want to keep the lightness of the materials uniform. So Aluminum came to mind. I don't have a MIG welder so I won't try to arc weld a frame (doing this with arc sucks and is nearly impossible with my level of expertise), since I've only welded steel beams and really thick angle steel and highway plate. I would have to depend on bolts and friction. This is the fun part, though. I bought some little wheels like the ones found in sliding door showers and figured I would use that as my sliding portion, relying on the friction caused by the weight of the moment arm to hold the platform in place. I actually am considering using some sort of thin foam tape to help it out since aluminum is very slick in this form. Continued...

I had to fashion a "stopper" on my own. I was thinking of using a door stopper like the one found on the center hinge of any interior door to your house, but they're kind of fancy and have a slightly curved edge to them which would in turn necessitate too much alteration. Plus, if this custom stopper doesn't work, I always reserve the right to try the pre-fab stopper.
It's a little crude and simple, but actually quite effective as I found. Here's an example of one side assembled, although not complete: Continued...

I think it'll work fine once the whole frame is in place. I actually am considering just using a few pieces of angle aluminum instead of a wood base under the styrofoam. I think the wood would increase the weight too much and the stryofoam has enough structure so that it could support weight with a few cross-beams. I also have to put lock washers on the bolts so that they won't slip under load, but I think it's the safe, sound, and low-profile design that I've been looking for.

Man is this thing looking intense! I have frequented your thread since finding it, and it just keeps getting more and more impressive.
I do have a couple of questions for you though....... Seeing as how it is going to be so light and primarily made of foam, do you have intentions of sending this thing out on the water with maybe an RC propelled engine system? Also, have you considered a couple of small oxy/acetalyn ( have NO idea how to spell that......lmao!) tanks and some brazing rod on that Alum. elevator platform? Its not quite welding, but for such a light application, it may be the way to go if you dont want all those bolts.......
