Thanks for the kind words, guys. This has been a monumental feat... and it's not over yet.
I've been giving the elevators some thought. I had considered the fact that having six motors power the three elevators might be a bit of overkill. And in actuality it probably is. As cool as it may seem to have electrically actuated elevators, my resources would be best spread out somewhere else (like airplanes or crew). I came up with this proposal. I think it works, but I have no idea what this type of mechanism is called so that I can start looking for it: This is a side view I figure if need be, I can build this out of wood and small hardware parts. If I can find them ready-built, that would be preferable. Anyone know what this type of mechanism is called? Anyone? Bueller? So, I think I finally have that problem solved. WHEW! Hittin' it hard tonight!

nice. I would probably add a thick frame around the top surface to keep whatever items you have on the elevator from falling off. It might even work better if you built the wheels in a two sided track to keep the elevator locked into place.

no idea what that might be called if it even has a name, Zoomie. I would guess you're gonna be building it from hardware parts. As for the tracks for the wheels that GI Guppy reccommends, desk and dresser drawers frequently have those kind of tracks and they would help keep the elevator attached and aligned without the need to totally reinvent- well- the wheel.
It's interesting to me that the superstructure has been the thing that got you the most bogged down. When I build mine, I'm thinking I'll build it first because it won't be that much fun for me. But I'll be driven to finish it every time I look over at my foam pieces just wishing I'd cut the deck already. I've been mail ordering my carrier air wing and having them sent home- haven't even seen them yet! I have so far: 3 Conquest x-30s 3 Skystrikers 2 SHARCs (that I will ONLY use if I can custom some landing gear on them) 3 PTE F-18s 2 PTE A-10s or if I run Cobra, 3 Python Patrol Conquests 3 Rattlers 1 Night Raven 2 Fang Choppers 5 Flight Pods 1 Firebat I want to get an Osprey, but teh only place I've seen that sells them is this guy's toy store in Italy that has them but no pictures of them and a very confusing website with a variety of prices all of which are high and I don't know if I can trust it.... especially since I'm still in Iraq and it will be months before I get home to see what was actually sent to me.... I also want to get 3 Dragonflys and repaint them as Sea Cobras... Did I mention that the Rise of Cobra TOTAL lack of impressive aircraft is making me think maybe I should build a 1/48 scale carrier instead with 1/48 Aircraft models so I can build a bigger carrier air wing and be less restricted... anyway... keep it up and show us the pics Zoomie! |

So, you're very right, MakWiesel. The superstructure is the part that seems to be the hardest to complete. It is also the brain of the ship and the most intricate parts of the ship as a whole. This foam is not very forgiving with small cuts. In retrospect, I would suggest maybe using the 3/4 inch or 1/2 inch foam. It's probably easier to work with. This 1 inch stuff gives the structure a beefier look, but it's a huge pain in the ass to make it look like what you want it to look like.
I've reached almost a point of completion with the ATC level of the superstructure. The windows look better than the lower level, but not so dissimilar that they look awkward. The bridge doesn't require the same visibility as the Air Boss, so the different windows make sense. Maybe this is just me justifying the improved design... So the top level went a lot easier than the lower level... The small gap got a little confusing, but I solved it with a little logic. Very little. Cutting this small piece out is a lot more difficult than it looks. Remember, this stuff has a grain and going against it usually causes the foam to flake off at weird angles. It wasn't a perfect cut, but then again, it doesn't have to be a perfect cut. It'll be obscured by other features on that deck. It just has to fit in that small, oddly-shaped space. It fit pretty well. This all took at least an hour. These cuts aren't as simple as they look, and if you don't take your time, you will "f" them up. Luckily, I didn't "f" anything up too bad this time. 'Til next time.

Quite a carrier wing you've got there! I should probably buy more F-18s, but they seem kinda difficult to pay for on my salary (no longer in the military; be glad you get the military pay scale, it's much better than the civilian world). Still, I wanted to turn it into an EA-18G. Just need the EW pods. I hope you make it back safe so that you can get to work on your, too. Maybe someday we can see them side by side somewhere...
