Me too! Hell, I don't even have a regular Flagg!

I'm also giving myself a month to do it in. April 23, 2009 is my target date, so hopefully the updates will be fairly fast and furious. We'll see what happens. I'm sure I'll run into all kinds of trouble. In engineering, like the military, no plan every survives first contact with the enemy.

So here are some pics of the skystriker I'm customizing. She's my old sjystriker from back in the day. The damn paint won't hold on this thing, so I guess I'll put on a matte clear coat finish just to protect it. Or maybe I'll leave it alone. I'm not going to be playing with it... much.
Anyways, I'm doing a modified skystriker/jolly rogers scheme, which I'm doing on all the planes, except the Su-27. Here's the space that will soon be filled with a grotesquely obsessive man-toy... Incidentally, this is the platform that my USS Flagg was on before. It'll probably be either the stern or bow support. My first four pieces! We get to cutting tomorrow. We'll see what happens!

How about the USS Wadsworth named after the base where the Pitt was hidden under in the comic books? That's going to be an insane sized carrier "toy" ha ha. Like the SU-27 MIG, do they have the Russian "Bear" Bomber? How about a Hind?

You got blueprints or drawings of your future carrier?

Yeah, I do. And once my scanner gets working again, I'll post them. They're real rough looking. Pretty much pencil on printer paper. I wish I still had that copy of AutoCAD. I lost it when I moved back here to St Louis. An engineer would be ashamed of my blueprints...

I've actually dabbled with the idea of making my own aircraft out of foam and styrene. I was drawing up plans for a Cobra MiG-25 or a MiG-29 when I realized I was getting off-track from the actual goal... building an AIRCRAFT CARRIER. Maybe when I'm done I'll whip one up and see how it goes.

This can serve as kind of a preview of what I had in mind. These were done with pencil on paper for ink. Not kidding. I lost most of my huge graphing paper in my move and never really worried about it. And I am not gonna go through the expense to replace it. So here goes:
I have three elevators planned. I had to extend the width of the flight deck in order to accomidate the larboard side of the ship. This design posed many engineering challenges. How to create something in the confined space, but make it modular enough to be transported. You'll notice that the flight deck is broken up into four sections. The plan is that these four pieces can be built independently and placed together like a big puzzle. This also caused challenges for the hangar deck... I needed to keep supports close enough together to support the deck, but also needed to leave enough space for aircraft to fit inside. As it is now, two aircraft can fit snugly in the two larger hangar bays, while one aircraft could fit in the center hangar bay, but since you can really see it unless you stick your head inside, it will go a little less used than the others. With the island, I'm trying to maintain the KISS principle (it's supposed to be a TOY) while still giving it a real-life feel. I simplified some of the different sections and it is similar in size to USS Flagg superstructure. The main key is, I'm going to focus on function. I may move these around as I see fit. Maybe instead of flight control on the second level, I'll make that the radar room and make the first level a rec hall. I wasn't planning on creating berths, but maybe I'll incorporate something like that in the flag bridge. Like I said, this design is fairly open to interpretation and fluid at this point.

So I started cutting the waterline portion of the aircraft carrier. You're definitely gonna need one of these:
This shit stinks to high heaven. Had to run the fan in the basement for a good 30 minutes just to get the fumes out of there. Anyway, the hot knife is a little difficult to control and since I've never worked with this medium before, it took a few passes to get the hang of it. I think I might try cutting it with a straight edge and breaking like we did in construction to see if I get a cleaner edge. Otherwise, there gonna be a lot of waviness in the edges and thus a lot of shimming and filling to level the decks. Anyway, here's the aft 11 feet of the hull waterline below the first deck. We'll experiment more with the cuts tomorrow. I have a feeling that the main hull and decks of the carrier can be done in a few short days. I did this much in 15 minutes.
