I periodically get emails from Shapeways, and there's a lot of neat designs and items cast in a variety of different mediums on their site. The thought of a Joe-style figure cast in metal suddenly cropped up in my mind. So without doing any prior research whatsoever, I figured I'd pose the question here and see what becomes of it.
I don't think the entire figure could be metal - the parts that pop into place need a certain amount of flexibility. So it would exclude the head, lower arms, hands and feet. Those would still have to be plastic. But the remaining pieces shouldn't be a problem. Any thoughts?

It's definitely possible but would probably be a lot more expensive(?) and definitely more dangerous than resin casting.
Not to say someone couldn't try it, but I can see why if nobody has yet to give it a shot. I'd think getting small details would be really really hard to do... |

The details may get lost or be less defined if cast in metal. I don't even know what the benefit would be casting in metal, to be honest. I was just wondering if anyone had tried it. I remember a smaller than 3-3/4" line of military figures that were metal from the early '80's. Can't remember their name at the moment.
On another note, I've seen vac-metal customs and translucent customs. With the Joe Con customs out now, has there been any glow-in-the-dark customs before? What about the color-change feature like Zartan had?

I think Eagle Force was the line I was trying to think of.

There was another line in the early 80's that was 3 3/4" scale. I'm not sure of the name, but they had a gold robot, a silver astronaut with a white head, and a black and silver cop figure. They had the same articulation as the straight arm Joes minus the movable waist.
The astronaut was really bulky and being cast in metal it made him super heavy! |
