You can make multiple selections on the poll.
Two types of line shown - a pro fishing line & a nylon crochet yarn. I would prefer something like the first but about twice the thickness. Which should I go with? Three hook sizes shown. Left to right: Size 12, 10, & 16. Again which should I go with? I like the compact look of the 16 on the fishing line, but that sure is a small hook scale-wise.

I like the fishing line and the bigger hoot, but man, sand those edges down, that's just an accident waiting to happen...

I usually used a hi test braided catfish line. It's about the right diameter, is already black, and you can heatseal the ends. It was made by Gudebrod, but it's out of production now, so you'll have to hunt for it. You can see it in the left hand of the figure below. Failing that, I'd suggest a cotton twine or embroidery thread. You may have to color it with a sharpie to get the color you like, but in terms of material you won't find much closer to the original stuff Hasbro used.

Okay, I picked up another cord. This one is a wax coated linen.
Third from the left with the hand touching it. I put the size ten grapnel on it.

Funny thing about that. I tried to blunt the points on a 16 but it somehow actually make it sharper?! I'll just use caution for now.

The fishing line is good for a climber but if your on an Op & kitted out I`d say the nylon works better for realism, due to the weight you have fully geared up. Real world the ropes come in various sizes for strength. With that each to their own when it comes to their toys.
