Just wanted to drop off a little FYI / my personal observations on acrylic paints for customs and some previous advice given on them in this section.
First of all, again as per some good advice given here recently, I tried some of the "Testors Model Master" ACRYLIC paints, and boy let me tell you this is some NICE paint!! It is VERY smooth, spreads well, and has a very nice color and is MUCH nicer than those cheap acrylic paints that you get at the fabric store / Wal-Mart / Michael's / whatever........ Those are ok, but this stuff is NICE! WELL, worth the price for it. You can order it online directly from Testors if needed, and they have a nice color chart there. THAT said, I ordered some FLAT "Model Master" acrylic (and again, this is NOT regular cheap Testor's model paint that comes in the little jars - this IS acrylic and those are NOT) for some projects I have coming up, namely some uniforms and the hair and face on a couple of figures. Well, here is what I discovered - As NICE as this paint is, the FLAT "Model Master" acrylic DOES have a slight "sheen" to it. :( Not glossly like regular gloss paint, but it's definitely not flat either - more of a "satin" or semi-gloss finish if you will. .............and yes, the bottles I bought ARE marked "Flat paint". Anywho, not so much as a complaint as and FYI, b/c there are some things you might want this kind of finish for, but if you are after a flat out (no pun intended ) "flat" finish, this is NOT going to do it. :( I'd say either still go with the cheap acrylic like you get at the fabric store, or use the regular Testor's oil based "flat" paints. Here's a perfect example - These are two figures I am currently working on, and not ready to reveal yet. The one on the left I wanted a more traditional "fabric" look to the shirt, pants, and vest, and the one on the right was meant to have a "leather jacket" kind of look. You can see the difference, the one on the right is done in the Testor's MM acrylic - see the sheen to it? Better yet, the jeans on the one on the right were done w/ the cheap fabric store stuff to get that "denim" look to them. I've also got a Torpedo I recently did not pictured here and I wanted his wet suit to have that shiny, wet neoprene look to it like the do when they just com up out of the water before they dry, and the Testor's MM acrylic was perfect for that, as the other stuff would have just looked like a regular fabric uniform kind of thing. The other thing I have found too is the cheap fabric story acrylics also give that more "textured" look, again, prefect for fabric - just look at those jeans , but not the right "flat paint" look for everything. Anywho, hope this helps someone. PS - I ran into the same thing with painting hair on figures - the cheap fabric store stuff gave a more realistic looking hair kind of paint, and the Testor's MM gave more fo a "greasy" kind of look, like if it were slicked back or wet even. HTH -

Yeah, it does have sort of a satin finish. But, it sticks to joints like all hell. If you want a flat flat black, use the Aircraft Interior Black. I wish Model Masters had as good a color selection as Tamiya. I love Tamiya colors, but it just doesn't hold to the softer plastics.

Seconded.
Though I find myself going to a non true black in Tamiya NATO Black more and more. The artist in me cant stand how flat blacks have a tendency to wash out details. Back to the point. I have gloss, semi gloss, flat, and aircraft interior and flat is the least used. |

Testor's Dullcote spray will make ANY paint super flat. You can make some crazy realistic looks with it.

I've found that if you thin the MM with water it will dry almost perfectly flat. Much flatter than using it straight out of the bottle and it still keeps your paint from rubbing off.
As for spray cans of flat, it's been hit or miss for me. Some react with the soft plastics and never really ever dry. Others go on perfectly flat and then weeks later go glossy. |

Tamiya DOES have a color chart there, but the chart is not large enough to get a real feel for the color, plus they look "artificial" on the SITE. My local places don't stock Tamiya (or MM for that matter :(), so I'll have to mail order some of it to try it, especially that aircraft interior black - thanks for the tip! .

Gotta try that, thanks! Don't get me wrong, the Testor's MM flat black has it's place as is, and I like having more options for finishes anyway. Again, it worked great for a black leather look and for that wet suit neoprene. .
