So I've done lots of research... and I'm ready to drop some money on my first set of paints. I've decided to go with Testors Acrylic paint. I'm reaching out to the tank for some help! I'm not finding that they sell primary color sets in flat. It seems primary are all gloss sets... how do you guys get your primary sets? Do you just buy an extra clear flat bottle? Does the extra layer effect the quality of the look? Or are there specific primary flat colors you use?
This is what I was thinking of starting out with: flat white (large?) flat black (large?) semi gloss black semi gloss clear flat clear flat olive drab skin tone light skin tone shadow steel leather Do these exist?: flat orange flat blue flat red flat green flat yellow I'm not really sure on my approach to my first set of colors, I know I want to paint details like buckles and guns and backpacks and then try a few figure repaints to see how it goes, I've seen glossy figure paints and I don't like their look so any recommendation would be greatly appreciated on what I should be getting! |

I use testors and to date at my local hobby shops have only found gloss black, no semi gloss and no clear. They do have basic colors and some do have flat (indicated by a f before the color) for some colors, but they will be crappy shades you won't use. Also the only small paints come in boxed sets. The rest are small enamels and not acrylics.

With a little practice, you can mix any color from the following colors;
Red Yellow Blue White Black I usually stick with flat, or add a small amount of gloss to the mix. If you want metallic colors, you can add silver into the blend. If there's a color I think I'll need a lot of (like od green) I'll pick up a bottle of premixed color. Other than that I just buy those primary colors in bulk. |

I'll second Model Masters. I know a lot people use Tamiya, but it doesn't bond to the plastic like Model Masters.

I also use Testors Model Master Acrylics. My basic set up usually consists of the following:
Aircraft Interior Black (flatter than Flat Black) Flat Gull Grey (Light white grey) Gloss Black Dark Grey/F-15 (Medium grey) Gunship Grey (darker than the above) US Army/Marines Gulf Armor Sand Dark Tan Earth Red Medium Green Olive Drab Interior Green (my base green for Joes) Insignia Red Insignia Yellow Insignia Blue White Silver http://WWW.TESTORS.COM/category/136645/Acryl_Paints I'll supplement those with two from another line of Testors Acrylics, Poly Scale/Floquil: Israeli Early Camo Blue (perfect for Cobras) Warpac Grey/Green http://WWW.TESTORS.COM/category/1378...odern_Military

Testors Model Masters works great for me as well. Tamiya I find is almost too thin.

I've unfortunately found a few MM paints too thin as well is experimenting with colors. I've found a few that thicken up too.
