well i got some testers the other day an painted freds head an gave him a beard an it bonded quite well!, i was amazed. i paint for a livin' an didnt think this paint was gonna be that good. but what i did do that everyone else don't do is washed it wit a bleach solution. most cats say they use soap. i rather not cus soap leaves afilm an will disrupt adheision!. but to each his own! anyay perhaps you forgot to wash the item you were paintin'!

Try thinning the paint out a bit, and applying several thin coats of paint. And washing is important - the piece and your hands. Ordinary skin grease will cause the paint to not bond as well as it should. Make sure the paint is shaken/stirred up real well also.

Also, make sure you shake the paint really well. Make sure it is of a milky consistancy, not watery.

Make sure your paint is thoroughly mixed. I use a home made stir stick. Make sure that the surface you're painting is clean. I'm guilty of not always doing this, but the Model Master paints I use are pretty forgiving. I'd reccomend wiping it down with some rubbing alchohol. Lightly sanding might help, as well.
Make sure you're using an acrylic paint, not a solvent based enamel. Enamels won't properly cure on the softer plastics used on modern Joes. They'll stay tacky for years, if not forever.
I've had problems with a couple brands of paints, not properly adhereing to toy plastic. One was the acrylic enamel craft paints that wal-mart sells, the other was Vallejo brand acrylic model paints. For both of those, I've had good luck using acrylic primer, under the paint. Again, I use the Testor Model Master, but Tamiya primer should also work.

Hey, you CAN paint...you just need practice.
keep in mind the paint we/you use is MODEL paint.
Models don't have moving parts or people scratching it with their fingernail.
A figure painted with model paint needs to be treated like a ...model.
There is a guy out there who claims "Acrylics suck"(he's not on this site), my response:
Anything sucks if you're using it beyond its intended purpose.

acrylics suck?! he must work at a mattel factory in china...
i actually think tamiya is not the greatest.
try something like the testors mentioned earlier, and i have also heard good things about game workshops and/or valeo, the stuff found near the warhammer miniature game pieces. my personal favorite is mr. hobby paint. its from japan so its hard to get in the states. luckily i grabbed a bunch when i was stationed there. = )
and yeah, not all customs can hold up to getting scratched with your nail. just be patient and remember they are delicate. you'll do fine with practice!

Buy the tamiya thinner. It works wonders. Also, use thinner coats. Sometimes you might have to do 2 or 3 coats to get an opaque color but the results will be much better. Just relax and use an extra Duke (we all have them) and teach yourself the proper way to paint on these figures.
