This is not my invention, but I can attest to it. I do a slightly modified approach, in that I don't have the socket permanently affixed to the channel locks - I find it's helpful to be able to slide it into the proper spot for each different figure. The only torso I've had trouble with thus far is the Duke style torso.
Anyway, sorry if this is a repost. I just saw Alyosha's great tutorial on the block technique, and this one is a bit more suitable for those who are too faint of heart to whack their $8 plastic bits with a hammer. I've also tried the screwdriver technique, but caused much collateral damage. And the exacto up the seam technique is old news for me now. 25th Joe Disassembly...alternate method - CobraIsland |

I look for openings on the torso somewhere....then use a razor to gently push apart...then use the screw driver Method.........

Yea, I used a vice at work, just wasn't sure how much pressure was too much. Maybe I'll try this one too...

yep!...it is pretty much the same principle as this method, just much less involved...
-wrap fig in soft cloth -place in vice with shoiulders against jaws (still wrapped in cloth) -slowly close vice, when it pops, stop...figure is open! |

Figure is open, and arms, torso parts, that little plastic washer, etc... have all flown everywhere. lol. I guess if the vice is still somehow covered with a bag to prevent the loss of parts, you're good. I've tried them all, and the link here is still my favorite.

This is how I used to do it to. But it got to where I dreaded making a custom that required this kind of effort. Then I found this technique, and it's made this part of it fun again for me. That's just me though, I suppose. |

Best method I've seen so far and seems alot less potentially destructive then the hammer and wedge technique.

I still use the hammer method most of the time, for this reason:
I've had to pop apart TF Flint torsos a lot, and I have had very little luck with the wrench and socket method - under the arm is flat and doesn't hold the socket well for me. I bought a fairly soft mallet and as long as I'm patient (lots of moderate hits instead of full-force) it opens very nicely and cleanly.
