DUDE... I'm So There with you. I just wish there was a much cheaper place to find loose figures for parts. I too have sacrificed my only figure for parts and yes the process is far more enjoyable than anything.
I find that it is almost like meditation when Im in the process of making a figure. I've always enjoyed stuff like this though.. before the days of CGI I wanted to be a Movie Model Maker.
Alas.. I'm left with my hobby but I do enjoy it. Like you I don't care about the "VALUE" because value is extremely realitive. The value of making a custom to me outweighs what I might get on Evil-Bay.

I would have to say its not about doing the custom , its about the creativity that is had from it. Customizing is not something you pick up and knock a home run on your fisrt go. it takes time to get your skills where you will like a custom figure much better then a Big toy company release.
I used to be just a collector, then I started customizing and never turned back. Everey figure in my collection will end up a custom at some point.
i still have some joes on display, but as time goes on, the shelves get less and less full, I go after fodder and the shelves are my first go point.
Also customs bring a much needed change to a figure. I grew up with some of these looks, I would like new takes and fresh ideas on them. When you limit yourself it tends to get boring after a while, and why so many collectors get the "BURN", you know the that feeling, when you walk into your toyroom or hobby area and see all your collecting stuff just sitting on shelves, and you think, Damn i spent alot of money on this stuff just to sit here. Hppens to alot of guys, and first thing they think, I should sell all this shit, which you never really make back what you paid.
All in all customs bring you face to face with your toy, make you handle them and pose them, and in my book, thats playing with them.

My collecting of anything kinda stopped around the time I started doing more SW customs, and the same with Joe's. I still buy at least one of each(none of a few)of the factory figs for the shelf, but the bulk of my buying is for parts. Hell, I've passed on some new figs just to get parts from older ones. Yeah...customizing is at the top of my list. It's 100x more fun than collecting, to me.
And can I tell you how much the little woman just loves the fact that I start on a new "project" right after finishing the last one? She is actually very good about it though, so I can't really complain. She has an excellent artistic side, so she let's me have my space for my "art" too.

I started pondering customs at the end of the summer. Something I never really tackled before, but after the first few quick mods I did and one or two full out customs I wondered why I hadn't tried before.
I still enjoy getting the new Joes when they're released, but I do think I more so enjoy pairing up parts and coming up with the paint apps to create new/unreleased figures. It's definitely become a new and most enjoyable hobby.

I was into making custom vintage POTF Star Wars, but it got too expensive, and with all my other collecting it got too hard. I think the reason I'm collecting the joes is because of the new style figs with the old style packaging. But here are some of my custom Star Wars.

I like both, but I have begun to tread more to the customizing side... It is addicting, I have numerous projects going on at the moment. I have actually started lacking in the collecting and buying two or more of each figure.

I buy the figs for my son. He just tears them open so we don't collect per se. He is 5 so he is just enjoying the toys. I just starting customizing since I started buying him Joes. I really enjoy the customizing aspect of it. He doesn't care what I get him as long as it is Joes. He finds the customs cool.
