All in all I too try to stay way from potential figures hasbro may make but feel safe when i do something like steel brigade, sunbow unmasked storm shadow and unmasked vipers.

I've got 38 customs so far and at least 10 more half done. I started collecting these figures with the specific intention of customizing them. I love it. I prefer many of my customs to the official ones, and after a while I tend to forget which are custom and which are not, once they are all displayed together. I'm very careful to make them look "official", and no one I know who is not a collector can tell the difference. To me customizing is the best part of collecting. My Cobra army contains 25 custom characters, both new and unproduced ones, and 9 additional troop types.

I find customs fun but I only enjoy the idea of making characters that wont get made or characters that are just way off what they should look like. Like leatherneck

My customizing of figures was born out of collecting them. It started with Star Wars over 10 years ago and has not stopped. I get frustrated with figures that are "pretty good" or "almost accurate" and I feel the overwhelming urge to make it better or closer to what I think it should look like (or what it really should have looked like)....but I get a hell of a lot of enjoyment out of it and I enjoy the collection I have much more when I have added a touch here or there...

For me, it really depends on the figure. I certainly have loved making customs, and I don't mind using up figures to make one. I only have one Clutch, yet I had no problem cracking him open to replace his arms. As another example, I used parts from the comic pack Shipwreck, even though I have no plans to get another one. (Shhhh...don't say anything but I've even used previously opened shark tat Shipwreck arms for a custom.)
Similarly, I don't mind ripping open the last MOC version of certain figures if I need the parts. For example, I've used TF Flint arms in several customs, to the point where I raided my last remaining carded TF Flint. Someday I hope to find another to keep carded, but I'm more than likely to eventually use that one for another custom!
Even so, there are some figures (carded or uncarded) that I will not harm in the making of a custom. My loose yellow Stalker...no way. And since I have a nearly complete carded collection, I'll likely not mess with most characters.

I prefer customizing and collecting, right now customizing is winning out over collecting because theres really not much to buy at the moment. Usually when I make a figure I try to only make figures I know Hasbro wont make, unless I hate the figure thats coming out. For instance, I have been holding off making a starduster figure for along time now hoping that Hasbro would finally realease one. After seeing Hasbro take on it I decided to just go ahead and make my own since I didnt like what Hasbro had to offer. I probably have around 150 custom figures that I have made over the past 2 years and they are all favorites in my collection. I actually prefer my customs over store bought stuff because I know what kind of work went into making them. I do enjoy the process that goes into making them but Im very happy with the end result too.
On top of doing figures I also really enjoy doing Vehicle customs, my only problem is I am slowly running out of space to store them, not to mention I have so many ideas for vehicles that I find it hard to make time to a vehicle custom. I will say I am most proud of my vehicle customs and get the most comments from people about them. I still comments every week about some of my vehicle customs that I have done well over a year ago. I would gladly sacrifice any new vehicle to custom anyway and thanks to the cheap vehicles hasbro is putting out it makes it all the more easier. Now if could I only find to time to finish all 4 of my Killer Whale custom vehicles that have been sitting on my work desk for over a month now.
Just to give you an idea of what I have bought just for custom figures. The pic below are all carded figures waiting to be opened for customs. Theres over 110 figures there just waiting to be opened. That doesnt even include the box of figures I have already opened. So my collecting feeds my customizing if you will.

Customizing is number one for me. I started out collecting, but I got hooked on making my own figures. I really enjoy making (and/or improving) something that you can't just go out and buy. It's somewhat of a challenge for me to come up new characters or update older characters that won't be or haven't been released yet.
