I'm working on my first customs, and I accidently bought two enamel paints along with my acrylics. One of the enamels dried with no problems, but the other (leather color) is sticky and won't dry. I bought some acrylic leather paint to replace it, but I'm not sure what the best course of action is now. Would it be ok to just paint over the enamel or should I scrape the enamel off and repaint? Does anyone have any experience with this? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Get yourself some thinner....I think Testors sells one. I dont know what type of plastic it is on (softer or harder plastic), but I had the same problem when I was making POTF2 star wars figures. Enamel will dry on harder plastic, but softer plastic....it stays tacky forever. I still have one that I never stripped down...its been 10 years, and the sucker is still tacky. Hope that helps. Definitely dont paint the acrylic on top of the enamel....oil floats on water, and you will get a nasty mess when all is said and done!

Another thing you can do is use Castrol Super clean. I use it to strip model car paint. Just test it on a not so important part to be sure.
I might try it tonight on one of mine. ;)

Thanks for the help. Paint thinner seems to be working fine at getting most of the enamel off, and then I'll go ahead and repaint with Acrylic.
It's really strange, because I used enamel flat black to paint my V2 Snake Eyes and my TF Flint arms (to put them on my regular Flint) and they dried perfectly, but the enamel leather for Flint's gloves still isn't dry two weeks later. |
