i was hoping someone could tell me when your customizing a 25th figure like lets say frag viper for instance. how would i go about making his head? would i have to get some kind of molding set and use my rah frag viper and make a cast fo his head?
or do you literally take someone else's head and just start cutting away at it untill you shape it into his head style? i really want to start making customs but this is the part that baffles me, just like that swet ass techno viper from joecon. how the hell did he make that? |

Well there are many different methods. Some people cut parts away and sand, some use an epoxy putty called "Green Stuff" (I've just started using it and I definately recommend it) also you can use parts from other toys. Since you mentioned the Techno Viper custom from Joecon, let's look at it:
Techno-Viper Looks like the head is from one of the newer Biker Scouts from teh Star Wars line (The visor appears to be cut off) with the goggles from Spytroops Blackout (Or DTC Low-Light) sitting on top The chest could be a Flash chest with spare parts added on (Possibly the hoses from a Tie-Fighter pilot) The arms are from Battle Armor Cobra Commander Upper Legs from a Cobra Trooper Lower Legs from Zartan |

there's really no absolute way to do it, if that is what you are looking for. you can cast it from an original frag viper head; you take take a frag viper head and mod it to fit; you can take a head that is similar and sculpt it to be closer; it is all about being creative and resourceful.

If you have a low budget like me, you can mod just about any figure using super sculpey. As opposed to baking the sculpey, boil it. If you were to do a Frag-viper's head you can sculpt right over a pre- existing head. Once you're happy with what you sculpted boil the head in water for about three of four minutes (sometimes it takes less time.) Once it is cooled down you can paint it and get the part you were looking for. I used it on a few figures I posted. I'd say try that if you can't get a hold of the "Green Stuff".

Hell, you could probably use the old Frag-Viper's big ol' head, and dremel out a neck socket.

If it was me I would just take an ARAH Frag Viper head, cut off the neck ball joint and take a dremel and hollow out the head. Get yourself a Beachhead or Firefly head and use the hollowed out Frag Viper head as a helmet.

thank you guys for sharing. frag viper will be my first custom and i just got back from the store and am getting ready to work on him. i baught some extra joes at walmart that i thaught i could use for parts. i am very excited and think it will turn out good.
i am a artist myself. but customizing is new for me. i will post pics when im done although it will prolly be a few days to a week before its finished. i dont want to rush it and i want the paint to look as clean as possible. only question i have left is should i prime everything white then start painting or paint over the exsisting paint? i think i will prime but let me know. |

I usually just paint over everything, but one thing that will help is if you wash all the parts in warm water to get rid of any mold release agent that may still be on the plastic (It'll make your paint run and not stick to the plastic)
Also, I try to prime the joints as in sanding them down so there's less parts rubbing against each other (Typically I try to plan my customs so I don't have to paint the joints at all) You can use a dremel tool and a nail file (Start with the rougher side first then finish it off with the fine side of the file) |
