Hey guys,
This is basically a thread to help me get started on some customs I really want to try, but have been too concerned to wreck Joes that I like. I have been going through previous threads this morning and have not found what I am looking for. I don't have access to a bench vice, nor do I have a good amount of tools. My question is, What other methods do you use to open the bodies up on Joes and/or Marvel figures? Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Did you see the vice grips method? Or is that one of the tools you're inferring you don't have?

I'm no pro but I believe this thread has instructions on the most popular / easiest method:
http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...st-method.html You don't need a bench vice or a lot of tools - just a sock and a wrench wide enough to fit the shoulders properly. |

a nice set of channel lock pliers works in a pinch... skip buying one figure and buy you a set

How I do it:
Take your figure and stand his arms straight up (or as straight as they will allow). Find the seam under the armpit and shove an exacto blade in right where it starts at the bottom of the upper portion of the torso. There are four pins in the torso holding it together, if you're lucky, the first split will pop all of them. Don't bet on it, though. Repeat on the other side and you should be golden. Things to remember: This method can be dangerous. You're using a very sharp exacto blade. So be cautious. This method MIGHT leave a small gap in the torso. It depends on your blade and your skill. The gap is usually impossible to notice. I think that's it. Have fun. Be careful.

The plyers are pretty cheap, you can get one under $10
I have a vice and found that it seems to damage the figure more then the plyers. I put the figures arms down, by his side then I wrap the fig in a sock (not much, just enough to prevent teeth marks from the plyers and to catch the flying bits) The spot I use to apply pressure is right on the shoulders and use the hard plastic of the joints to help split the torso.

Please wrap the figure in a dock or towel before any attempt.
Also please note that MU torsos split much easier I believe that lowes carries a suction grip based vice for $10-$15 dollars that works well. |
