Working from the group picture drawn by Michael Golden from the Marvel G.I. Joe Yearbook #2 on the back cover, I'm projecting what figures I will need to cannibalize to make my own custom Oktober Guard figures. Working mainly from within the G.I. Joe 25th line, but also choosing bits and pieces from similar outside lines such as the new Indiana Jones and Star Wars line (which I need to research more thoroughly, because I know there's a lot to use, but I'm just not that 'up' on the line), as well as accessories from bbi's Elite Force and sources such as Marauder's Gun-Runners. And I'm sure once Red Star gets in my possession, he'll be pretty useful - especially the satchel and backpack. I don't have a surplus of Joe figures lying around to tear apart, so for now, I have to pre-plan, and get what I need as I go. (I do realize certain parts listed are interchangeable, like Snow Job's legs for Wild Weasel's, Snake Eyes and Stalker's bodies, etc., so anybody interested in trying their own, use what you got.)
Colonel Brekhov - Andre Leninovich Brekhov, Team Commander (Ukranian) Head and Body (Colonel Dovchenko - Indiana Jones/Crystal Skull) Accessories: Harness (Cobra Air Trooper - G.I. Joe) AK-47 with foldable buttstock and grenade launcher (Marauder's Gun-Runners) Walther PPK pistol (Marauder's Gun-Runners) - The figure of Colonel Dovchenko is a close representation of Colonel Brekhov. I'd like to have his forearms replaced with Duke's and his upper arms replaced with Wild Weasel's, but I'm not sure how well the Indiana Jones figure articulation would accept that (not to mention how you crack open the upper torso). A few paint applications, like darker eyebrows and hair, red shoulder epaulets, and paint up the Cobra Air Trooper's harness to dark brown. Daina - Daina A. Janack, Sniper (Czechoslovakian) Head (Dark Woman - Star Wars Comic Pack #31) Body except Lower Legs (Lady Jaye - G.I. Joe) Lower Legs (Scarlett - G.I. Joe) Accessories: Belt (Wild Weasel - G.I. Joe) Dragunov rifle with sniper scope and bipod (Marauder's Gun-Runners) Luger pistol (Marauder's Gun-Runners) - Lady Jaye's body would be a good stand-in for Daina's. I'd like some different arms, but with the limited female figures in the Joe's 25th line, pickings are slim. I'm also not sure if Scarlett's lower legs will work with her, as Lady Jaye has knees and Scarlett does not. It should, but you never know. Her body would be painted a Czech camouflage pattern, mostly light browns and greens, while the boots would be black. The head from the Star Wars Dark Woman seems to be a good one to use for Daina. A few other paint applications, like the pocket on Wild Weasel's belt, and to the Dragunov sniper rifle should finish her off. Stormavik - Commando/Paratrooper (Russian) Head (unknown) Upper and Lower Torso (Shipwreck; without anchor on belt - G.I. Joe) Upper Arms (Wild Weasel or Snow Job - G.I. Joe) Forearms and Upper Legs (Cobra Viper - G.I. Joe) Lower Legs (Snake Eyes Wave 8 version - G.I. Joe) Accessories: Harness (Cobra Trooper - G.I. Joe) Satchel (Snake Eyes - G.I. Joe) Beret (from either the Elite Force line or Marauder's Gun-Runners) Thompson Submachine Gun with ammo drum (Marauder's Gun-Runners) Walther PPK pistol (Marauder's Gun-Runners) - Stormavik needs a square-jawed head, and again I will probably have to look for something from the Star Wars or maybe even the Indiana Jones line. I originally thought of painting Stalker's head caucasian and losing the mustache, but there's bound to be something else more suitable. The body parts and beret would all be painted khaki, while the accents on the gloves, pockets and knee pads would be a lighter brown (leaving the boots black). The harness and satchel would both be a dark red-brown. Other accents like the Russian Paratooper patch on his left shoulder would be light blue and yellow and a red star on the beret. Horrorshow - Anti-Armor Specialist (Russian) Head (unknown) Body (unknown) Accessories: Backpack (Elite Force) RPG Launcher (Marauder's Gun-Runners) AKS-74U Assault Rifle (Maruader's Gun-Runners) - This guy's supposed to be pretty big, and there's not really any current Joes to choose from, so I may have to hunt through the Star Wars line for something. I was thinking of using Gung Ho's lower legs, but that's about as far as I can go with any of it. Schrage - Heavy Machine Gunner (East Germany) Head (Russian Soldier - Indiana Jones/Crystal Skull) Upper and Lower Torso, Upper Arms (Snow Job - G.I. Joe) Lower Arms (Buzzer - G.I. Joe) Upper Legs (Cobra Viper - G.I. Joe) Lower Legs (Roadblock - G.I. Joe) Accessories: Harness (Copperhead - G.I. Joe) Satchel (Snake Eyes - G.I. Joe) RPK PKM Machine Gun with ammo drum and bipod (Marauder's Gun-Runners) Luger pistol (Marauder's Gun-Runners) - All of the body parts would be painted olive drab, including the hat on the Indiana Jones Russian Soldier (who would be a good candidate, but the figure's too short). The gloves would be a dark grey, and the boots would be black. The collar would be a darker green with red insignia. The satchel and belt would all be painted a light brown. Again, since Roadblock's lower legs don't have the knee joint, I'm not sure how well it will work - it should be fine, but you never know. Dragonsky (plainclothes) - Bear BTR Operator Head (unknown) Upper and Lower Torse, Arms (Copperhead - G.I. Joe) Legs (Snake Eyes - G.I. Joe) Accessories: SIG550 Assault Rifle with double clips and scope (Maruader's Gun-Runners) Tools and Tool Bag (unknown) - Another head sculpt undecided upon. Paint the tanktop white and the lower legs dark grey, with the boots black. I'm still looking for a decent tool carrier I could use, as well as some more tools to go in it. I have a few things from the Elite Force line, like bolt cutters and a small hammer. Dragonsky (flamethrower) - Flamethrower Head (unknown) Upper and Lower Torse (Snake Eyes Wave 8 version - G.I. Joe) Arms and Upper Legs (Armored Cobra Commander - G.I. Joe) Lower Legs (HISS Tank Driver - G.I. Joe) Accessories: Helmet (unknown) Flamethrower Tanks and Gun (Dragonsky - G.I. Joe Comic Pack #101) - I'd like to have used a larger bodied figure for Dragonsky, as he's a pretty big dude, but with the lack of parts within the new Joe line (again), I have to settle for what's currently available. The Armored Cobra Commander body would do fairly well as Dragonsky's flame suit, with some modification to chest and back, although upon receiving the wave 8 Snake Eyes, I think I'd rather use his upper/lower torso. Remove the carabiners, fill int he holes in his chest and voila. I'd paint it a dark red, while painting the chest plate, gloves and boots black (purple if you want to stick to the comic coloring). Hopefully, in the future, I'll have a larger upper body part to use, something Roadblock-sized. Or maybe I'll look for something within the Star Wars line, where I'll probably have to find the head and helmet anyway. There are some tactical vests that originally came with the Power Team Elite line (you can also get from Maruader's Gun-Runners) that I think might go well as a flame-retardant vest, or maybe use the Cobra Viper's vest modified a little (like remove the grenades). Other characters to look into: Big Bear - Russian anti-armor specialist Lt. Gorky - Mikhail D. Gorky, Russian Naval Infantry (Russian) Red Star - Anatoly Krimov, replacement commander after Col. Brekhov dies Sgt. Misha - Constantine C. Misha, Russian Spetsnaz Trooper (Ukrainian) Bull - Maura D. Stortskiev, AT-UAZx "Gator" Operator (Russian) Manta - Blacksharc Operator Satinski - Hind XR47 Operator Scattershot - W.A.S.P. Operator Volga - Weapons Expert Opinions? Wow! You really put a lot of thought into this! You should check out Alyosha's site for the heads. He has a ton of 25th heads and he has some great ones for Dragonsky and Daina.
I purchased the Indiana Jones Colonel Dovchenko and Russian soldier with plans of using their whole bodies for Colonel Brekhov and Shrage. I know that they don't have the chest articulation like the 25th joes, but let's face it... that articulation doesn't exactly work phenomenally well. Besides the sculpting work is just too crisp and beautiful on those figures to use anything else and they're a perfect match to the issue # nine version of the characters (which is the version of the Guard that I plan on doing). I agree that the Russian soldier is a bit short, but I've been thinking of trying to convert the hip articulation on both figures to be more like the T bar jointed Joes- so maybe there' s a heightening oppurtunity in there somewhere. Horrorshow is truly the tough one. I can't figure out what to use for his body- that puffy jacket thing he where's is going to be impossible to swipe from another figure and the idea of having to sculpt that detail on is just too much. The new Snake Eyes figure has a similar patterning on his torso, but he's a bit small and thin for Horrorshow and that would still leave the problem of checkerboard patterning the arms. Great thread! I'm hoping to grab some ideas from others as they reply. Good luck with these! I can't wait to see the finished product. Last edited by miked; 05-24-2008 at 09:25 AM.. |

I didn't think of the Jakks Pacific WWE Build'n'Brawl line for Horrorshow - but those figures seemed a bit short. And again, you'd have to add a lot to fill out his coat. If it comes to that I was thinking of using one of the big Kashykk Wookies, except I don't think they have neck joints, so that would be some heavy duty customizing. I might go to the store today and browse through the toys for the parts I haven't identified yet.

I edited my list somewhat - having received a few newer figures, and looking more in depthly to other lines. Now I'm working up to finding the figures I need to start building...

I agree - we all want new figures. But it takes a looong time to go from concept to packaged product. We all know that for the time being, there will be more in the future, especially with the demand from the fans. And in the meantime, the figures we're getting are a way to keep us semi-happy, even if they are repaints or previously used molds.
What I'd like to see available is parts - perhaps a small bucket of factory imperfect parts that a customizer could pick up for whatever - $10 or $15 dollars. No matter what, Hasbro won't be able to put out every figure, and customizing is a good way to fill out and personalize your own collection - in addition to giving those unhappy with certain aspects of the line the opportunity to do it theirselves. |

Just some ideas for Horrowshow as he has been on my custom list for awhile.
Head one of the Golden Compass Russian Guards. I think they are Russian they come with a wolf. The Jacket looks like it might work too. The Bazooka figure as a base is not a bad idea at all. Jakks is said to be releasing a Yokozuna Build N Brawl so that torso would def be big enough. The current Umaga torso is better for a Fridge custom. If none of those work a Star Wars Rancor Keeper is def big enough. |
