Part 109 - How Wenry Ended the Rolling Scissors:
After dominating the skies over Sector 858A, the Sky Pirates that were once elite members of her Majesty, the Baroness’s own personal Air Wing, the Cobra Immortals Companion Air Cavalry, thought themselves to be invincible. They were a thorn in the side of the Strato-Viper Air Corps. As a result, the Great Cobra Commander unleashed his deadliest pilot to end their domination over Sector 858A. Lieutenant-General Wild Weasel, a mercenary pilot, was hired to re-establish control over the skies of Sector 858A. Nothing is known about Wild Weasel other than his reputation as the Ace of Aces. Although Wild Weasel specialized in ground support attacks, he earned his reputation by shooting down more enemy planes than anyone else during the 3 days war between the Cobra Immortals and the Imperial Iron Grenadiers. During that time, he was the principal rival to Wing Commander Fio as the 2 raced to score more kills. Wild Weasel had twice the number of kills as Fio and the only reason he didn’t have more kills was because he ran out of ammunition. Wild Weasel knew that his best chance for success was to separate Fio from her wing woman. So he issued a challenge to one of them. The communication broadcasted over Sector 858A read: “From the office of Lieutenant-General Wild Weasel, this message is addressed to the Sky Pirate Lieutenant Wenry Rockbell, call sign Ghost Hawk: You are hereby challenged to face Lieutenant-General Wild Weasel in a duel to the death over Sector 858A. Come alone if you dare. Fear not Commander Fio, you are next.” Upon receiving the challenge, Wenry looked to Fio for guidance. Fio could only stand by and say nothing. This was a challenge directed to Wenry and, as much as Fio wanted to intervene, she knew that Wenry had to decide for herself whether to face Wild Weasel or not. Reluctantly, Wenry geared up and headed into the hangar. She climbed into her Ma.K Falke, an anti-gravity armored fighter which she named the “Full Metal” and prepared for take-off. Fio was by her side to wish her well. While looking at her control panel in dismay, Wenry asked Fio, “I can’t beat him can I?” At that moment, Captain Shana O’Hara’s voice came over Wenry’s radio, “What the hell are you thinking? This is no time for gallantry! We need your air support during tomorrow’s attack on Prometheus! We cannot afford to fight Cobra on their terms . . . “ Fio interrupted the transmission by turning off the radio. Fio then responded to Wenry’s question, “You’re the best pilot I’ve ever flown with. You can beat anyone. Just be careful, he's a skunk but he fly's like nobody's business. You have to respect that. Watch out for the Sun, he likes to dive down from his opponents' blind spot.” Commander Fio didn’t bother to reply to Captain O’Hara. Fio knew that only a fighter pilot could understand why Wenry couldn’t possibly refuse Wild Weasel’s challenge. So with that, Wenry the Ghost Hawk took off alone and headed East to meet certain doom at the hands of the Ace of Aces. While flying over Sector 858A towards the meeting point, Ghost Hawk’s mind began to drift. She kept thinking of everything Fio taught her, but she began to doubt herself. She wondered whether she was good enough to shoot down the legendary Wild Weasel. Just at that moment, Ghost Hawk was suddenly awakened from her daze as tracer rounds flashed down just in front of the Full Metal’s nose. It was Wild Weasel screaming down from the Sun. Ghost Hawk broke hard right to turn away from the fiery stream. As she turned, the Full Metal received a gaping hole on the left side of the fuselage. Ghost Hawk’s radio crackled with Wild Weasel’s voice saying, “Come on little girl, you’re making this too easy for me. That was only a warning shot. I want this to last. I expected much more from a student of Fio the Fire Bat!” The Full Metal started spewing black smoke from the left side. Although damaged, all controls seemed to be okay. So Wenry suddenly yanked the stick straight back lifting the nose and sending the Full Metal into the clouds. Wild Weasel soon followed and the 2 of them engaged in a deadly dance among the clouds called the rolling scissors. The rolling scissors maneuver is typically an engagement of two fighters of similar capabilities with respect to their thrust-to-weight ratios (and thus similar climbing capabilities), turning characteristics and wing loading. Essentially, it is all about energy management. As your attacker dives down on you, you climb to lose speed and allow the attacker to pass underneath. As he does, you roll over and dive down to attack your attacker. If your attacker is also a skilled pilot, he will attempt to do the same to you and the cycle is repeated. If you slow down too much, your fighter will stall and you will tumble uncontrollably from the sky and you get shot down. If you do not slow down enough, your attacker remains behind you and you get shot down. The first pilot to make a mistake is the one who does not walk away from the fight. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sci...lling_Scissors Only the most expert pilots fully understand this tactic and Wenry’s skill is not nearly as fine tuned as Wild Weasel’s, but that’s not going to stop her from trying. From their underground bunker, Commander Fio and Captain O’Hara watch images from their network of surveillance cameras spread out all over Sector 858A. They watch the deadly tango in the sky as Wenry desperately threw the Full Metal into swirling spirals in a fight for her life. Over and over, the two jockeyed for position in what seemed like an eternity to Wenry as she strained with the controls while feeling the crush of the severe G-Forces weighing down on her frail body. It was as if a ton of steel were somehow strapped to her by an imaginary cable that constantly pulled on her as it swung in the opposite direction of her turns. Fio cried over the radio, “Weasel you f*cking bastard! If you wanted a fair fight, why didn’t you challenge me?!” Wild Weasel grunted, “I wanted you to watch this one die before I kill you.” At that moment, Wild Weasel gained the upper hand on Wenry and let loose a stream of fire that ate away the Full Metal’s left control surfaces causing an explosion of sparks and flame. Wenry’s cockpit began to fill with smoke. She lost control as the Full Metal began to veer slightly to the right in an uncontrolled descent falling faster, and faster. Wild Weasel calmly followed behind his latest victim as the Full Metal streaked out of control to lower and lower altitudes. He laughed over the radio and declared, “Is this all you’ve got little girl!? Fio has failed you. And no one is going to save you now. I'll give you a choice, you can go down with your fighter, or I can put you out of your misery now. Which will it be?” As Wenry’s cockpit was filling with more and more smoke, the G-Force was crushing her against the left side of her seat. She started to feel the heat from the fire as she thought to herself, "WTF? WHY DID LANCE GIVE ME THIS USELESS G-SUIT WITH THESE DAMN TUBES EVERYWHERE? What is the point of all that crap?!" She slammed her controls to regain power. Over and over, she struggled against the G-Force and yanked the levers in hopes that the control indicator lights would come back. Just as panic set in and she began to black out, she heard the sound she had been hoping for. With a loud click, the lights on her controls miraculously came back on. Full control was suddenly restored and her mind was re-energized. By now, the Full Metal was almost in a complete nose dive and although Wenry’s body felt completely crushed, her fighting spirit was not. With all her might, she twisted and yanked the control stick hard left while slamming on full air breaks. The result was a maneuver thought to be impossible for the Ma.K Falke anti-gravity armored fighter. The Full Metal twisted in mid-air a full 180 degrees to the left violently slamming Wenry to the right side of the cockpit. The shock and pain that shot through her body was worth it because she was now facing backwards putting Wild Weasel directly in her crosshairs. To his horror, Wild Weasel found himself staring directly into the barrel of the Full Metal. He reached for his trigger but it was too late. Without hesitation, Wenry squeezed the trigger for the first time during this dog fight as she replied to Wild Weasel over the radio, “Fio taught me this move.” The torrent of fire from her guns bored a hole straight through the fuselage of Wild Weasel’s fighter emptying out all manner of metal, electronics, flesh and bone from within. The remains of his fighter tumbled out of the sky like a hollow metal tube billowing a trail of smoke, flame, and cinder. This is how Lieutenant Wenry Rockbell, the Ghost Hawk, ended the rolling scissors. Continue: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...lance858a.html

Wenry Rockbell Background
Lieutenant Wenry Rockbell, call sign Ghost Hawk, had something in common with her lead, Wing Commander Fiona Leone, call sign Fire Bat. Both of these women graduated at the bottom of their class in Strato-Viper Academy. Wenry’s instructor wrote a complaint to Cobra Commander saying “Wenry is hopeless. She seems incapable of following the tactics and basic maneuvers from the instructors. She fly’s sloppy, and her dog fighting skills demonstrate erratic maneuvers with no control what-so-ever. I recommend sending her to the Baroness. Wenry is simply not good enough to be a Strato-Viper. Perhaps her Majesty, the Baroness may have use for her flying cargo planes.” And with that complaint, Wenry Rockbell was sent to the Cobra Immortals who were in need of fighter pilots due to territorial disputes and conflicts with the Imperial Iron Grenadiers. As soon as Wenry arrived, she was partnered with a fellow Strato-Viper Academy flunky, Wing Commander Fiona Leone. In a Cobra Immortals Air Cavalry tradition, the two pilots were allowed to fully customize the paint scheme of their fighters and name them. To help foster a bond between partners, pilots were given uniforms that matched their partner’s fighter, not their own. When Wenry noticed that Fio had chosen to paint her fighter, the Porco Rosso, bright red, Wenry complained to Fiona ("Fio" for short), “Because you’ve chosen bright red for your fighter, I’ll be getting a bright red uniform. That doesn’t exactly improve my ability to evade and survive if I get shot down over enemy territory.” Fio responded, “Stick with me kid, and you’ll never get shot down.” Wenry wondered how Fio could be so cocky. Afterall, Fio was rejected by the Strato-Viper corps for the same reason she was. They both flew sloppy and had dog fighting skills that were considered erratic. But on the 1st day of combat in the skies over Sector 858A, Wenry realized what Fio must have known all along: it was their sloppy flying and erratic maneuvers that saved them in their dog fights. Wenry witnessed Fio pull all manner of wild twists and turns, expertly breaking all the rules in the book, during their dog fights. It wasn’t that Fio and Wenry were incapable of flying by the book. They simply chose not to follow the book because Fio realized that her enemy would expect her to utilize those tactics just as Fio expected her own enemy to do so. That is how Fio was always able to anticipate where her enemies wanted to go. That is how Fio was always able to point her guns in the right direction at the right time. What the Strato-Viper instructors did not realize was that Fio and Wenry did not fly by the book only because they were about to write their own book on the art of dog fighting. After betraying her Highness, the Baroness, the two women went on to become the most infamous Sky Pirates of all time. No matter how many escort fighters Cobra sent with their cargo planes, the escort fighters would turn tail and run while the cargo plane dumped its cargo, at the mere sight of the Fio’s unmistakable bright red Porco Rosso and Wenry’s Full Metal on approach. The enemy pilots would then pray that the sky pirates did not pursue them.
