I got a question for firearm experts. I've started making slings out of rubber bands for a couple of Marauder rifles. When the rifle is held in a firing position, should the sling hang down below the hands or be attached to the top of the rifle, around the shoulder, like a guitar strap? The first choice seems to defeat the purpose of a sling while the second has a bit of limited mobility. So for the ones who have handled real rifles, which way should it be?

The military professionals will no doubt chime in soon, and more accurately, but part of the answer is: depends.
It depends on what weapon it is, what time-frame it is, and whether you're considering a patrol sling, intended to carry the weapon in a ready-to-use position, faster but less comfortable; or whether you're considering a conventional sling, intended to free the hands and keep the weapon out of the way but not leave it behind.

Right now this is one of the better ones out there, and in my opinion a better alternative to the "fashionable" three point tactical slings that are all the rage now.
These are simple two point slings that still allow adjustment on the fly. I used them on all my long guns (rifle and shotguns) and highly recommend them. Larry Vickers is a smart guy and knows his stuff as far as what works and what does NOT work in the REAL world. While I would not suggest trying to copy these sings for function at 1/18th scale, I would use their mounting locations on the weapons and the way they are looped around the body for carry in their different positions - firing, ready, rest, etc. HTH

In addition to carrying the weapon, the sling is used to stabalize the weapon when you fire it, The front part of the sling is looped around your forearm/wrist while your lead hand holds the forearm of the gun, thus basically making the gun an extension of your arm and thus much more stable.

esg2145 has a good link for assault rifle sling tactics.
But for some reason when I read your question and saw Marauder I read Mauser. So I was looking for basic rifle/ old school sniper holds. So it would depend on what type of weapon you are using as to sling configuration and usage.

Being in the Army for 7 years and specializing in small arms, i can tell you that we only had slings on our weapons every once in a while. And when we did, it did not factor in on how we fired our weapon. The few times we had it on, we just let it hang loose. I qualified expert with my rifle when the sling was attached and just hanging as well as when it was not attached...

Thanks for all the professional feedback, guys.
So far, I've only made slings for the AK47 with bayonet (a close approximation for the CG rifle because I only have Freds). I think I'll just keep attaching them to the bottoms and letting them hang loose. BTW, I don't want to step on people who are selling slinged weapons' toes, but Goodies medium sized rubberbands work great. They come in black or clear and take paint and superglue very well. I found them at Safeway. |
