I've got a couple of Alyosha heads to transplant on some 25th Joes, but I'm having a heck of a time coming up with a good technique for painting the eyes. any recommendations on brush types? Tricks?

I use a 20/0 liner brush to paint both the eyelash and the pupil. A 5/0 liner for the white.

paint the eye black, then paint the white, leaving a slight black line above for the eyelash. apply a dot for the eyeball, shape the eye with the flesh color, and voila.

Make sure you give them a quick bath in acetone before painting. It helps the plastic pores relax and take the paint much better. Use all the usual precautions when handling the chemicals though, and NEVER use it on factory plastics. And thanks, mostly, I just cast them though. |

sewing needles work good for removing excess paint mistakes, and some high powered reading glasses!

You really have to work backwards from what you initially think. Also, I've found that if you're starting with a head that's not the flesh tone you want to end up with, just start with the eyes, unless you're painting African-American skin tones. If that's the case, then you'll want a solid darker base as a "primer" color. From now now, I'm starting with the black first directly on the mold, then the whites of the eyes, leaving the eyelash arch, then doing the pupil, THEN painting the flesh tone around it, like GunslingerCBR stated above. If not, then you end up with too thick of layers underneath the eye. Is there any easier way to do, say, the eyebrows though, so you get that nice S-shaped latina-tranny eyebrow shape? It's a bitch to do. I end up with straighter eyebrows that I trim in like the eye, black first, then masking it with the flesh tone. Also, painting with strong lighting can work wonders for customs. I do all my work at home with my house lamps, then get them under fluorescent lights at work, and it really shows the flaws. Take a pic with a flash, and it looks even worse. (HELLO FLAWS!) So you'll want a good light while you're painting, or you'll end up going back with touchups, and the more layers you add, the less sculpt quality you'll retain. This should be stickied in the customs section. |
