Rebel Angel Part 105: How Conrad and Dashiell Became Wanted Criminals . . . Again.
Word of Captain O’Hara’s surrender to the Outlaw Star known as Cover Girl spread fast. Captain O’Hara was highly regarded as the most capable officer the Viper Academy had ever produced and the Vipers Foreign Legion was thought to be invincible. In fact, until now, no officer of the Vipers Foreign Legion had ever surrendered. See part 101.
Upon hearing the news, Conrad Hauser and Dashiell Fairborn fell ill with a sense of guilt. They owe their lives to Captain O’Hara. She offered them clemency when they were captured nearly 2 years ago. See part 104.
She offered them rank as Ghost Recon Scouts in her beloved unit, the 176th Light Brigade of the 13th Vipers Foreign Legion. The Foreign Legion was possibly the most feared unit in the history of the Viper Corp.
Captain O’Hara also gave Conrad and Dashiell the benefit of her formal education, the discipline it takes to be a military officer, and even her sense of compassion for her fellow man, including those who serve Cobra. But most of all, she offered them a chance to make a difference in the lives of Prometheus’s suffering masses in the peasant class. She was unlike any Cobra officer they had ever known.
There was no doubt, that without her, Conrad and Dashiell would have been executed long ago at the hands of Major Bludd. So it was with great regret that the 2 men were not by her side when she was ambushed.
During the time of the ambush, Conrad and Dashiell were scouting Cobra convoys. Despite the fact that Conrad and Dashiell were now in service to Cobra, they purposefully stalked shipments meant for Major Bludd’s security forces and fed information to other groups of bandits. These bandits would ambush Major Bludd’s supply convoys and secretly distribute the spoils to the peasants in an effort to alleviate their suffering and stave off starvation.
Captain O’Hara allowed Conrad and Dashiell to conduct this act of treason because ever since she arrived at Prometheus, Captain O’Hara made several requests for Cobra to send relief supplies to the peasants. Her requests went unanswered. So she turned the other way while her Ghost Recon team conducted their own humanitarian missions against Major Bludd's forces.
When Conrad heard the news of her surrender, he didn’t hesitate to reach for his riffle and gather 14 days supply of rations. He turned to Dashiell and without saying one word, Dashiell knew what was on Conrad’s mind. Dashiell knew that Conrad had feelings for Captain O’Hara. Although Conrad and Shana never exchanged a single word regarding their feelings for each other, it was obvious to Dashiell that every glance those 2 shared meant more than words could ever express.
Conrad and Dashiell both knew that attempting a rescue mission meant confronting the Outlaw Star, Cover Girl and her infamous Battle Android Trooper, the Wolverine. This was undoubtedly a suicide mission. For if the entire 176th Light Brigade was nearly wiped out by Cover Girl, what chance would the 2 of them have?
But in Dashiell’s mind, it didn’t matter. Nothing would have stopped Conrad from charging into the Badlands, and Conrad would go alone if he had to. Thankfully, Dashiell would not allow his brother to face doom alone.
Dashiell thought of the first time he met Conrad. They were only 5 years old. Dashiell had fallen into an oil drainage pit far underneath the basement of the refinery they had been forced to work in. Dashiell was left there to die by the local Cobra security officers.
After 2 days in darkness, the 5 year old Dashiell finally heard an answer to his cries for help. The cries were answered by another 5 year old voice. It took Conrad what seemed like hours just to locate Dashiell in the darkness. And it seemed even longer for Conrad to find enough rope to pull Dashiell out of that drainage pit. Though it was a traumatic moment in his life, Dashiell remembers it fondly as the day he met his lifelong friend that became like a brother to him.
The two packed their supplies and planned to head into the Badlands. However, they were in for a surprise. Upon stepping out of the Foreign Legion’s command center, they were greeted by Major Bludd’s Crimson Guards who quickly surrounded them at gunpoint.
Now that Captain O’Hara was M.I.A., the Lord Major Bludd assumed command of all Cobra forces at Prometheus. His first order was to arrest Conrad and Dashiell. But one thing the Crimson Guard were never informed of, and the one thing that Conrad and Dashiell never forgot, was how useless the Crimson Guards’ M-40 assault riffle was on the Foreign Legion’s body armor.
And with one look at each other, Conrad and Dashiell signaled that they notice these Crimson Guard troopers were armed with nothing more than the M-40. And without hesitation, the 2 men raise their weapons at the Crimson Guard Captain.
“Lower your weapons! They’re useless here.” Conrad yelled in a commanding tone.
Startled and unsure of himself, the Crimson Guard Captain sought comfort in realizing that his men outnumbered Conrad and Dashiell, 10 men versus only the 2 of them. Although he was shaking, the Crimson Guard Captain muttered in the most confident voice he could muster, “You are hereby under arrest by order of his Noble Majesty, the Lord of Lords, the Master of all . . . . . .”
Dashiell interrupts, “We don’t have time for this.” and pulls the trigger on his Ghost Recon S - 6 Sniper Riffle. This riffle was designed to puncher heavy armor at a distance of up to 2 miles away. It’s accuracy allows its shooter to perform open heart surgery through virtually any body armor. In fact, enemies of the Foreign Legion usually do not realize that there is a Ghost Recon Sniper Team nearby until someone’s chest suddenly erupts in an explosive red pulp. And in the hands of a sniper like Dashiell, this S - 6 riffle should be considered the lightening bolt of Zeus himself. On its sight is an inscription that reads, “You call down the thunder, and I shall reap the whirlwind.”
So with a riffle so powerful and deadly, Dashiell fires at the Crimson Guard Captain at no more than 10 yards away. The round whips right in between the Crimson Guard Captain’s legs just underneath his crotch. The velocity from the bullet split the air around it so violently that the air slapped the Captain’s inner thighs with such force; it ripped away the crotch of his pants revealing his unmentionables. He slowly fell to his knees in shock and proceeded to wet himself.
Conrad turned to the other Crimson Guard troopers who all found themselves immobilized from shock and awe. Although they were still surrounding Conrad and Dashiell with riffles aimed, not a single Crimson Guard trooper was able to mutter a word.
Conrad said to them, “We’re leaving now, and we’re taking your jeep. Anyone got a problem with that?”
Not a sound was made in response.
The two men lower their guns, turned their backs on the motionless troopers, and proceeded with their suicide mission to find and rescue their beloved Captain Shana O’Hara. This is how Conrad and Dashiell became wanted criminals . . . again.
