So now that I've got Hasbro's 'official' Monkeywrench it's time to put mine out to pasture. I've only slightly 'touched-up' the new MW by giving him some glasses and carving Maj.Bludd's dogtags to more resemble MW's lucky charm. Since I know there are a lot of MW customs out there, are you customizers planning on keeping your own, or do you plan on putting yours away and putting up the "real" Monkeywrench?

I can't speak for those that have done MW, but I already have multiple versions of some characters without customs. So I would display them with the rest of the collection like I do now or have all my customs on a separate shelf.

If I were you Id take elements that you like from the new one and incorporate them on your custom.
When I get one I am taking him apart and building a custom one they are both nice looking but i dig your custom

Considering that I never finished my custom Monkey Wrench, I'm going to have to go with retired I will say though that typically I don't incorporate my customs with the official figures too often, but my Breaker has been with the O13 since day one The official Breaker is there too but I figure he's more of a Sparks type anyway

Never got around to making a MW custom myself, but there PLENTY other customs that were in the works that Hasbro made. All have been retired, but I think my custom Tunnel Rat may have to be reinlisted. I appriciate that Hasbro "tired" (term used loosely) to make him true to his character (short and having asian roots) and also throw in a nod to Larry Hama... but his gloves SUCK and really - why does EVERYONE have those damn forearms? Next thing we know, Hasbro will make Zarana and use them. If Hasbro was gonna make his legs shorter, then they should have made his arms shorter as well. Makes him look like a monkey.
Just wish a different head had been used on MW, but it'll do. |

I only display a small amount of my items, so I retire the stuff from my displays all the time as I rotate new stuff in.

I'll have to go with Tank on this. Your custom maintains the original feel of Monkey Wrench, but with a more subdued and lifelike tone to the color scheme. The Hasbro toy just seems to garish for my taste.
And regarding retiring customs, well, none of my toys are really retired (except for those bits and pieces in the fodder bin, and even those I try to put back together to form some new character). It's the customs that go on display, and those with simple head/body/gear swaps (me and my son are never content with the figures as is ) just go in the toy drawer until after my son does his homework, and we start playing at night. EDIT: Wait... I just realized that the Hasbro version was the one with the darker tones. In which case, I'd have to admit that I like the Hasbro version better, though I would give you credit for doing very well with the original color scheme. Sorry about the mixup.

Your custom is better than the "actual" version of Monkey Wrench, don't retire him, use him as your default version.

When making my customs, I try to be as accurate to the original as possible.
So when Hasbro comes around and puts out their rehash version of what I have made previously...well those figures get a seat at the rear of the bus. |
