And cap off the week with Low-Light’s partner in Dino-hunting, Ambush. Mentioned before that I never had either version of Ambush growing up so my first version of him in hand was the Club version. I didn’t mind that version on the shelf but he quickly loses his appeal once I have him in hand so I really wanted some kind of alternate version of him who I could enjoy taking pictures of. Enter the Dino Hunter version.
This build was born out of the body parts left over from the Big Ben v4 that I’m planning on putting together. The Marine paint job that Marauder did was so good that I felt bad painting over it so eventually I hoped to find someone the top worked for and I think it’s perfect for this Ambush build. So full Marauder WW2 build here using the Marine & American soldier as the base, a tan paint job for the pants & helmet and then orange paint for the accent pieces. Head is a cast that I did a full paint job on. Only thing I’m not crazy about is the tan helmet, liked it better with an unpainted green one but I love the head so much that he’s not wearing his helmet in my display anyway. Dino Hunter Ambush Ambush v2 Then some shots of the Dino Hunters together, with their original versions and with some friends.

Man, I have fallen behind with your stuff! I think I was thrown off because the Destro is still your picture in the thread’s headline...
Anyway, I see three new Cobra Commanders that are new to me, and a couple of Dino-Hunters who got updates. Let’s start with the Commanders. Both of the one using the WWII German bodies are nice and clean, though I prefer the darker blue, less comic looking one personally. That being said, the third one really caught my attention, being the armor version, where once again you went and started thinking outside the box by using the BFS Knight/Blank as the base. Dude, you are killing in with those! Both CC and Destro look spectacular using that base! Great job! Now on to the Dino-Hunters. Lowlight and Ambush are both spot on. You have used some difficult colors to work with, and from what I can see they look flawless! Bright colors are so hard to get a smooth look from, but it doesn’t appear to have been a problem for you. Lastly, the staging of the figures for the pictures is fun to look at, especially when you throw in one where your Joe (in this case Lowlight) is getting a gut kick from Cobra Adder! That dude has big feet and they appear to be wearing steel toe boots! Ouch! Again, great work on all, and I guess I need to stop in more frequently, regardless of the picture in the thread’s headline! -Todd Shakka85

Looking sharp. Nice work with these WWII parts. I didn’t think I would have much use for those parts, but you’re getting me inspired

Ambush looks good! It's nice to see the MTF WWII figures being used so well for customs. I'll also agree that the staging you're doing in these pics make them a blast to look at.

The Navy looks so menacing though and I love the cape addition to the build. That’s a really cool version of Cobra Commander that I’m happy i discovered. Thanks! That Armored CC was so much fun from idea to execution. Had no idea if it would work or if anyone would like it except me, haha. Glad to see it’s a hit because I think it’s such a cool spin on the armored suit. Haha, appreciate it! Working on so many 90’s Joe’s in such a short amount of time, I feel like I took a crash course in painting with bright or neon colors. Definitely forces you to get proficient in using them. Really happy I cracked the code for builds for these two because they’re really fun to have together. Lmao, those pics were so much fun to take because how often do you get to mess with dinosaurs and your Joe’s? Plus I’m not sure if they assigned Cobra’s for the Dino Hunters to battle so it was cool to be able to assign my own. I really like Night Adder leading those Night Watch Cobra Troopers because I don’t use any of them often but now they have more of a purpose in my display. Quote:
Glad to hear, can’t wait to see who you tackle if you start messing with these parts more! Really fun to use. Thanks! Really happy with how he turned out using those parts, just seem perfect for Ambush. Appreciate you mentioning the pics too! I have so much fun doing them so always cool to hear they are adding more enjoyment to the posts!

I knew we would reach a point where the “one a day” custom posts would have me just about caught up on my To-Do list (and deplete my parts bins, haha) and we are almost there so these may slow down a bit as I work on finishing some sub-teams and doing some figures who require more time. That being said, it had the desired effect; I got to share a bunch of figures with everyone while also pushing myself to finish a lot of my work in progress Joes.
This week may be a little random since it will likely just be me grabbing the few guys I have left who are finished along with some kitbash Joes. Up first is one that I struggled with for a while but someone I desperately wanted a modern version of, Secto-Viper. The BUGG was one of my favorite vehicles growing up, probably because not only was it a larger vehicle that made it to me, but also because it was in GI JOE for the NES and that is still my favorite video game of all time. I logged a ton of hours battling the BUGG over the years both in game and with my Joe figures and it never got old. Fairly easy Marauder build for this one. Just a little red paint added to mimic the color scheme of the original figure. Always contemplate getting a cast of Swamp Viper’s head to paint to see if I like that better than the riot shield look but I’ve always really enjoyed this build for him so I figured I would share it. Painting the riot shield helmet black is also a possibility but I kind of like how the white throws an additional color in there for him. Secto-Viper And although he doesn’t quite fit in the driver’s seat, some BUGG pics:

I like your Secto-Viper, except for the helmet. I would look for something different, to keep him more in line with that bubble/dome helmet. But that is just my two-cents worth. Otherwise, the red paint on the armor vest sells it, as the yellow is almost a perfect match!

Very cool! I thought about doing a Secto, but in the process of thinning out the sheer number of Vipers and other soldiers in Cobra, Sea Slug and him both got cut in favor of the Lampreys (who I haven't shown off yet) handling all the small naval crafts.
If you make any future updates on him, maybe switch the torso out for a black one with some yellow gloves, since the original has those black arms. Very good otherwise! |
