My grandmother grew up in a large family in Britain during the depression and had nine children of her own. To say she was a bit of a bargain hunter would have been an understatement. For Christmas shopping, she would buy tons of stuff on clearance and pack it away, sometimes for years until it was eventually given as gifts. I always got “real” presents from my grandparents, but the box that came from UPS would also be loaded with random gifts that were almost like packing material. Because of this, I would get toys for Christmas years and years after the had left store shelves. (I received some carded Star Wars ROTJ figures in like 1991). One Christmas, probably 1982 or 83, I got Steve Austin, Maskatron from Kenner’s Six Million Dollar Man like, and Pulsar. Although I wouldn’t know this until years later, Pulsar was Mattel’s bid to compete with those Steve Austin dollars. For me he was another bad guy for the Bionic Man to fight.
In my bid to drag all of the cool 70’s toys I had played with or seen in catalogs into my Joe verse, I had to make Pulsar. Everybody gets a story to make them integrate into my universe, so Pulsar, the Ultimate Man of Adventure, became Pulsar, the Ultimate Soviet Man, the communist answer to the Six Million Dollar Man. I made him a while ago, stuck him in with my the little 1970’s era Soviet team I had put together and that was that. Today’s drop of the Black Widow trailer brought him back to mind, so here he is: Pulsar: Marvel Universe Wonder Man, everything. My 70’s Soviet super agent team, Red Guardian, Black Widow, Winter Soldier, and Tugarin. I may eventually switch the head... The Wonder Man one makes him look like a roided-up Jim Jarmusch. Im thinking a He-Man head shrink cast...I’m pretty sure every 70s-80s Mattel head (Big Jim, Pulsar, MOTU) was sculpted by the same guy, they are all of a type.

It was Weequay and General Madine, who I gather were peg warmers BITD. I kept them carded and traded them for OOP hardcore and punk records a few years later. Not unhappy with that trade.

Nice looking figure, and an awesome story, in fact I'm a bit envious. Even as a kid, I had a fascination with older toys, I was stoked enough at 9 to find my collection from age 3-4. I can only imagine how awesome it would've been to have gotten carded figures from 10 years in the past.
Curious, what records did you get for the Madine and Weequay?

Nice custom!
You're right about the Mattel heads having a "look". I assumed it was the same head used for the Battlestar Galactica figure... but I can't tell. |
