Thanks bro! And I'd call that a well deserved plug, your set up is awesome, and the game is totally worth checking out.
I'm actually back and forth on the wood- I had a table saw burn out, not to mention the shipping is a killer, but I dont want to sacrifice durability. Ive been playing around with styrene quite a bit, though still getting my sea legs there, and I've recently thought of creating my own lighter weight boards out of styrofoam that's been clad in either HIPS or HDF. Meanwhile, Ive still been using wood here and there, but most of those builds are small and underwhelming due to the reduced cutting capacity from the tool failure. Kinda why Ive had such a lull in project posts, actually. In any case thanks again! Edit: just noticed you'd asked about shipping, which can fluctuate wildly. When I'm spontaneously building, I try and build to fit in flat rate boxes to cap that, but some of them like the Atlantikwall inspired bunker was nearly $40, and that was here in Cali, and the really big one was an astounding near $400 to Texas- the fact that the guy pulled the trigger was an immense compliment. Naturally, I've been experimenting a lot to get that down without losing quality in the process. I have to say, I have played around a little with styrofoam, and I just think the durability and easy of working with wood beats everything else. But, you do have to have the tools. If I were to be so bold to make a recommendation, maybe a bandsaw? You can cut straight on them with the fence, and of course curves as well. |

@Kuh Rupt
Hips is styrene, the "hi" bit is high impact. Started making the distinction mostly for myself while online shopping because styrene is a catch-all for the 3 most common forms. Just bled over I guess! Hdf is high density fibre board, or hard board. Pretty much the same as MDF, but denser and less porous, and it comes in 1/8 sheets, which I dig. As far as saws go, hardcorps is right on the money, a portable table unit will work great, I'd recommend amy model Dewalt for a nice balance of durability and price point... Though if you're just getting started, respect the tool- tablesaws have a higher risk factor than most shop tools will. @SBartek- Thanks again man, I'm glad you still dig it! The "not doing it anymore bit" was probably a bit of defeatism on my end, Id just had the saw go out (and a bunch if other crap going on), so I'd kind of reached my FK it point. Though I'm focusing on getting away from wood some, with a but of hybridization. Like I mentioned earlier, I really need to get the weight down without losing durability. @hardcorps- I'm with you there, Ive always preferred the job site saws, mostly due to limited shop space. Unfortunately, outside of craftsman or worse, even that's outside of my current budget. Life, I guess;). I've actually been using what's essentially a jigsaw mounted to a "table", called a Bladerunner. Not ideal at all, but with patience, it can handle smaller jobs. Id give it 7/10 for wood less than .25", but trying to get any accuracy beyond that is a nightmare. I also agree on the foam. It can work as a component, but as the sole material it's just too easily damaged for what I want to do. Spray foam, on the other hand, is the absolute shit for terrain. Durable as hell, and comes out "organic" looking right out of the can. |
